Hello, I'm running Xymon 4.2.3 on RHEL 5.4 and I'm trying to setup Xymon to receive SNMP traps from our Oracle database servers. We are also running Oracle Enterprise Manager on another server (we call it the "grid") that monitors the Oracle database servers too, but our DBA's want to use Xymon to alert them of Oracle problems instead of the grid server so they don't get alerts from two different places. The DBA's manage OEM(therefore I'm not familiar with it), and have configured it to recieve SNMP traps and send them to Xymon. I configured the Xymon server to receive traps using the documentation at http://cerebro.victoriacollege.edu/hobbit-trap.html. We do receive traps, but there are two problems: 1- The trap status diamond does not change color when it gets a trap or when the trap clears. My understanding is that this is set in the Oracle MIBS that are translated to the /etc/snmp/snmptt.conf.oracle file. I'm not sure how to change the file to get it to give different alerts. If I change the word "NORMAL" in the following line to "SEVERE" the trap status will go red, but will not return to green when the trap clears. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Drilling down into the "trap" status, you will see an error for the database server though. The snmptrapd.log and snmptt.log files (examples below) show the traps coming from the grid server. Does anyone know how to get the traps to appear under the database server name rather than the grid server? Bug in downtime display on info-page

Hi. This might already be fixed in 4.3, but I'll report it anyway. The info page in 4.2.3 shows the downtime information in the wrong order. In bb-host I added "DOWNTIME=*:5:0445:0555:reboot" to schedule a downtime each Friday morning for a reboot of a server. I know this downtime works as intended, and the field order is according to the man-page. But on the info-page, the downtime is shown as "Planned downtime:All days:5:0445:0555:reboot", so the "day" and "service" fields are mixed up. /Johan

monitoring network link aggregation (lag) using xymon

hi, we have network link aggregation configured between two switches. How we can monitor the switches and traffic on each port port of the switches and Link Aggregation is working or not on the switches using xymon. Looking forward for your kind reply. -Akshar

Thinking of updating my existing "Hobbit" install to latest "Xymon" 4.3.0... Any gotchas?

Hello, I hear a new Xymon beta of 4.3.0 is not far away so I'm thinking of updating my existing "Hobbit" install (running old "Hobbit Monitor 4.3.0-0.20080929" from subversion) to latest "Xymon" 4.3.0 from subversion... Any there any known gotchas relating to: 1. updating an existing install (done that before, but it's been a while) 2. the name change from Hobbit to Xymon 3. changes that have been made between these two releases 4. anything else And what gotchas are there likely to be, what do I need to look out for, test, etc.? Is it wise to backup my existing install first (I'm guessing 'yes'), and if so, which parts do I need to back up and which parts can I skip backing up (since I expect all the history is rather large and if I don't need to back that up, that would be nice). If there are likely to be a lot of update issues, are there any plans to document the update process, and/or produce an update script to help the process? I don't want to spend a long time updating my Hobbit install, but I'm also aware that filing bug reports (or feature requests on features that don't quite work as they should in my book, but are not really bugs either) on a 2 year old version is less than ideal! Remove the "see" links at the end of mail alert

Hi I use xymon to monitor multiple servers and services. A friend ask me if I could monitor some of her process on another server with my beautiful tools ;) The only problem is that I don't want to him to be able to see my xymon web page because it contains a lots of confidential information (list of process running, etc.). So, I want him to only get the notification through email (X is up, X is down, etc.). But, in each email, Xymon add a 'see' link at the bottom : > See > http://server-hosting-xymon-server/xymon-cgi/bb-hostsvc.sh?HOST=Friend-Host… As I don't want him to know my secret url, is it possible to remove it from the email ? XymonPSClient 64/32 bit and service runner issues

All, The Xymon powershell client is coming along, but I've run into some annoying issues which are little to do with powershell itself and was seeking some advice if anyone is more familiar with options available for Windows for running services and 32/64 bit environments. I was just testing on a 64-bit 2008 server, installed service from an interactive shell, created a reg key with servers list I want to use then started service. Problem was, it didn't find the reg keys. Turned out that XYMONPSCLIENT.EXE (ABC-SRVANY.EXE) is running in 32-bit mode, and despite the PDF doc suggesting it can run 64-bit apps, and that the explicit path for powershell.exe appears to be the 64-bit version, it started as 32-bit and couldn't find the reg key because it could only see HKLM:\SOFTWARE as the HKLM:\SOFTWARE\WOW6432NODE subtree. I could put in logic to detect that and explicitly use WOW6432NODE even in 64-bit mode, but there's no reason to be running in 32-bit mode when it should be possible to run 64-bit when running as a service. I also have an issue with ABC-SRVANY.EXE, that if the child powershell process dies for whatever reason, the service process is still running but it doesn't seem to care, doesn't try to restart, doesn't exit (which would allow Windows service restart options to take effect), just sits there! Does anyone have any suggestions? If someone is able to write a basic (.Net-based?) .EXE service runner that just calls a powershell script and runs in 64-bit mode if it can, 32-bit otherwise that would seem ideal. All it would need to do is start the child process, handle service stop/start signals and manage the child process, and exit if the child dies. Doesn't sound hard, but I have no development environment for that available so don't really know where to start. hobbit-clients.cfg modifications

Hello all, this should be an easy one. I have two hobbit/xymon servers at different sites. One (the older original) is Hobbit 4.2.0 and the other which was recently installed is Xymon 4.2.3. I have all clients sending data to both servers and this is working fine. In the hobbit-clients.cfg at both sites I have some adjustments that are different than default for monitoring, basically upping the warning thresholds. I've made many updates to this file on the older server and it works fine. On the newer xymon server, I copied the configuration entry for a particular client from the older hobbit server to the new xymon server and it seems to be ignored and I continue to get warning messages. I believe this is the way to up thresholds is it not? These are the entries that I'm using. Any ideas whether this is a syntax issue or something else? Thanks in advance. Question about trend graph scaling

Hi all, When I go to the trend page for a host and then click on a graph to get the 48-hr, 12-day, 48-day, and 576-day graphs, something doesn't look right. For example, I'm looking at the CPU utilization graphs: * In the 48-hour graph, I see 2 spikes for "user" this morning that were near 60%. * In the 12-day graph, those same 2 spikes only go up to about 30%. * In the 48-day graph, the spikes only go up to about 15%. * In the 576-day graph, the values hover around 10%. Furthermore, the legend at the bottom of the graphs shows max values that are lower than what can be seen on the graphs. I'm seeing the same behavior on the other graphs from the trend page...not just the CPU Utilization graphs. Is there a problem with the scaling of the y-axis between the graphs over the various timeframes, or am I not understanding the way that RRDTool generates these graphs? I did notice that if I zoom in from one of the higher level graphs to match a more granular graph, I get the same numbers that I expect in the more granular graph. For example, in my example above, if I go to the 12-day graph with spikes at 30% and zoom in to just the last 48 hours, the graph looks the same as the 48-hour graph with the spikes at 60%. The digest is still not quite right. Maybe the listserver needs a kick to reload its configuration.
