Can anyone think of a way I can debug the processing of hosts.cfg? For some reason my ".default." entry is not being read correctly, and no matter what I try Xymon complains. Thanks for reading. xymond_filestore - appending to files?

Hello, I would like to use the 'xymond_filestore' command to append to files when receiving information from a 'data' channel. As far as I can see it cannot do this, but the code in xymond/xymond_filestore.c shows that 'data' messages are appended to a temporary file (in Xymon 4.3.7, xymond_filestore line 59). The file mode is passed as 'a', whereas for other information types (status, notes etc) it is 'w'. Unfortunately the temporary file is later renamed as the live file (line 78). Since the temporary file no longer exists, it cannot be appended to next time (so is created as a new file). The overall effect is that the information in the data files is overwritten by any new message. I am not sure why the file mode is 'a' in this instance when the file is later just renamed. Should perhaps the temporary file be 'copied' to the live file instead if the mode is 'a'? This would then allow appending to work, but would also require some mechanism for removing the file otherwise it might get large. I'm also unsure how the expiry time is suppose to work. I can see that it gets set on the file, but what then? Is there some process that later checks the times and removes 'expired' files? Bug - xymon man page shows data parameter incorrectly

Hello, In Xymon 4.3.7 the 'xymon(1)' man page shows for the 'data' message type the arguments as: data HOSTNAME.DATANAME<newline><additional text> As far as I can tell this should be 'HOSTNAME.TESTNAME'. Attached are two patches to fix this (one for the 'man' page, the other for the HTML version). Both are just one-line patches. Purple storm

And a fiber cut to our DR datacenter caused another 5 hour purple storm. The traces on our DCs showed our DC's are our production datacenter getting and responding to all DNS lookups. None were getting forwarded down to our other datacenter. While this was happening, we changed our secondary xymon server to point to our linux bind dns servers (so that xymon1 was pointing to dc1/2, and xymon2 was pointing to binddns1/2), and that still had the purple storms on both xymon servers. At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Upgrade to latest xymon in the hopes that somehow some bug was fixed that's causing this? downgrade back to xymon 4.2.3 or even hobbit 4.2? Another idea that they are suggesting is changing all the shortname entries (in hosts.cfg) to FQDN entries. The problem is there are over 1700 entries and I'd have to essentially find out what domain they are in, and then do a rename command as well.. Not to mention that we don't have this issue unless our DR-DC goes down.. Just to make sure I got this straight, you've got two DC's on the LAN with Xymon and two DC's in your DR site. You shutdown the DC's in the DR site and now queries are timing out (or something) to the DC's on the LAN. If that's the case, I would first look at DNS on the DC's. If you do a packet capture on the DC's filtered by UDP 53 and the only packets from or to your Xymon server, then this would show whether the queries are making to your remaining DC's and if there is any delay in the response. It wouldn't surprise me is Windows was so worried about the missing domain controllers that it forgot to respond to DNS queries. If there's not, then refer to the tcpump you have going on on your Xymon server to make sure the packets are making it back with acceptable latency. I'm making the assumption that your DNS configuration has the zone in question as a primary, Active Directory integrated zone, also, are you running a caching DNS server on your Xymon system? I've seen some odd results with DNS caching. What order are the name servers in /etc/resolv.conf? I was playing with Debian this weekend and for some reason, no matter what I did it would not use any other name server than the first one in the list except for dig and nslookups, but not for regular queries. Of course you could always just install your favorite DNS server on your Xymon system and transfer the zones as secondary zones from your Windows boxes, that'll definitely solve the problem and remove the prerequisite of your DC's staying up so Xymon works. ...matter of fact, I think I'll do that myself.... Upgrade steps

I see that there are some pretty clear upgrade steps when moving from Hobbit 4.2.x to Xymon 4.3.x, but are there any upgrade steps when moving from Xymon 4.3.4 to 4.3.7 by chance? Or will the make install not overwrite the customized configuration files (hosts.cfg, analysys.cfg, etc)? Xymon 'data' directory

Hello, I have Xymon 4.3.7 installed in '/home/xymon'. I notice that at the top level there is a directory called 'data' (along with 'acks', 'disabled', 'hist', 'histlogs' etc). Can someone tell me what the 'data' directory is used for please? It is empty. On our BB system there is a 'bbvar/data' directory which contains text files of the current status of various tests for hosts. Is there any sort of similar arrangement with Xymon (that is, any ability to store the current reported status in a text file)? Having problems with custom perl script for emails in alerts.cfg

Hi folks. I have been working this week on trying to customize email alerts coming from xymon to our support team. I downloaded the html_Mail.pl script from the scripts pages. I have been trying to get it to work via alerts.cfg but it's not. When I activiated it, I also noticed that other email alerts I had stopped coming. Here is a snip from alerts.cfg where I defined it: #Macro definitions for email $SRMCUSTOM=SCRIPT /home/xymon/server/ext/html_mail.pl me at schawk.com FORMAT=PLAIN If there are errors in the perl code, would this cause all of the other email alerts not to work too or only this piece? Hello out there, having implemented Xymon 4.3.7 and working with it, I'm wondering about a "cosmetic" thing. We have several Xymon environments for several customer datacenter's. One environment has 40 pages on the main view, but they should be separated between PROD and TEST environments. At this time, they are separated by the name of the pages, for example "Application" and "Application-T" (for TEST), or "Database" and "Database-T" and so on. In the upper half of the main view, there are the PROD pages, and in the lower half of the main view, there are the TEST pages. The two halves are separated by "dummy" pages. For example: [Application] [-] [Application-T] The [-] is on of the dummy pages, the next dummy page is [--], then the next dummy page is [---] and so on. For me this is not really nice, I would rather like to have the ability to separate things using HTML-tags, for example <HR>, but I don't know if this is possible on the main view? rpm for VMWare vMA appliance

Does anyone know what happened to the yum repo on staff.telkomsa.net? I'm setting up a little VMWare appliance to monitor the VMWare servers. It's a minimalist CentOS 5.3 distro. Then I'm installing the VMWare-monitor software, which says to put a xymon client on the machine, and suggests Telkomsa's rpm for that purpose. Unfortunately, that went away a couple of months back. I haven't figured out, or have time to build my own rpm. The teribithia 4.3.7 version wants lsb, and who knows what else. I guess I'll start down that road.
