I'm starting to look at setting up 'propr' monitoring for my production SAP environment, and wonder if anyone else is playing with HACMP clusters

I need to split the monitoring for SAP and Oracle from the monitoring of the host it runs on -- because, in an IBM HACMP environment, the workload can move. So the oracle tests, *some* of the disk space tests, and *some* of the proc tests move from one box to another. So does the primary IP address. I need to be able to track 'colorado' the box (the hostname does NOT move) as well as 'colorado' the IP address. 'Colorado' the address could actually be pointing to the 'thames' or 'yukon' boxes. At which time, 'colorado' the box will be responding to the 'colorado-bt' adapter address (if 'colorado' the box is up at all). I can get some of what I want by running two clients, one for 'colorado' the box, and one for 'SAP' or some other such synthetic name. The biggest two challenges I see are splitting the OS filesystems from the application filesystems for freespace reporting, and the shifting IP address. I may have an 'out' on the IP address in the future, if I can migrate to what IBM calls 'aliasing' -- where they add the running address as a second address on the adapter and respond to both. And to make this a bit more fun, I have THREE of these silly environments to work with. Henrik, is there any way to hang two different IP addresses on the same bb-host entry such that the network connectivity test will be happy if either one responds? They are always on the same IP network, just different host addresses (our convention is to add 100 to the last octet to get the boot-time address for the matching run-time address). Is anyone else doing something silly like this? Hi Henrik using Hobbit 4.1.2p1, I can see in the "hobbitd" column several error messages like this : Latest errormessages: Bogus status message contains no data: Sent from hobbitd Bogus status message contains no data: Sent from hobbitd Looking into the sources, this message comes from hobbitd/hobbitd.c : msglen = strlen(msg); if (msglen == 0) { errprintf("Bogus status message contains no data: Sent from %s\n", sender); return; } Is there a way to know the "real" sender of a null message ? Additional NCV graphing questions

Does the NCV module allow any additional data on the page than the data points? Aside from the status message, I have additional information that appears on the page (after the status message and a cr). When I add data to be graphed via NCV, no graph appears, even though the data is surrounded by cr's. Is something like this allowed: NCV_sputil="sputil:GAUGE" NCV_sputil="queuefile:GAUGE,datafile:GAUGE" I have hosts that produce different data values that are all considered spool utilization. Can a graph definition be created to graph one data point for one host and two datapoints for another host (based on which host creates those datapoints)? Thanks. -- Rich Smrcina VM Assist, Inc. Other systems with same config. and binaries do not complain. I tried to attach the client data (msg.txt) but this is to big: ezmlm-reject: fatal: Sorry, I don't accept messages larger than 30000 bytes (#5.2.3) How to debug this? Thanks for looking in to it :) Just an update on this: As some have noticed - because it didn't compile - I have cooked up a "hobbitping" utility to replace fping. On my system, fping took about 90 seconds to do a full sweep of the hosts. hobbitping takes 17 seconds, of which 15 are a static 3x5 seconds delay while the non-responding hosts timeout. Eric was so kind as to confirm that it works on his system as well. So it's goodbye fping - hello hobbitping. Hi Henrik, I would like to have the feature "Disable until OK". Right now am using the 4.1.2p1 version of hobbit on FC4. Would it be safe for me to just compile the alpha version and combine the binaries, just to get the "Disable until OK" feature? If it is safe, which binaries/files should I get from the alpha to copy over to the current 4.1.2p1. If not, is there a patch file availabe for me to patch to the 4.1.2p1 to make the feature available? I hope I'm not asking too much. Thanks in advance. Regards.

fping tuning

We're monitoring 1420 IPs in hobbit, and it takes fping ~40 seconds to go through them all: <snip> [root at hobbit fping]# fping -i5 -b12 -f ips -r1 -t250 -B2 -q -s 1430 targets 1419 alive 11 unreachable 0 unknown addresses 55 timeouts (waiting for response) 1474 ICMP Echos sent 1420 ICMP Echo Replies received 0 other ICMP received 0.05 ms (min round trip time) 5.83 ms (avg round trip time) 281 ms (max round trip time) 40.704 sec (elapsed real time) </snip> Now, this seems a bit lengthy to me. I mean, if the avg round trip time is 5.83 ms, and there are 1430 hosts, should the total time in transit for all hosts should be 8336ms, or 8 seconds... right? Even when I remove the hosts that aren't responding, the results on are par with those above. Our polling interval is once every 60 seconds (which we want to maintain, because we like to know ASAP when something drops even one ping), so it's not a problem yet. We add hosts on a daily basis, however, so it will be a problem some time in the future and I'd like to fix it before it becomes a problem. This machine is a dual 3GHz Xeon /w 6GB of memory, running Fedora Core 5. I've flipped every bit in the kernel parameters that I dare via sysctl, with little to no effect on the poll time.
