Using "WithPeak" on mrtg rrd graphs

First I have to say Hobbit is a great tool. I am just testing with it and it seems to provide great features. Should the "WithPeak" option work if I am using mrtg with LogFormat: rrdtool ? Thanks Henrik, very helpful as always. I was able to hack together this little Perl script to do the job. I still need to make sure all the date and availability calculations are correct (since I won't pretend to be good at perl or math!) but it does what I needed so I figured I'd share in case anyone else will find it useful. If anyone sees problems or improves it let me know! Hobbit has some built in availability reporting, which also lets you output the result in a CSV format for importing into a spreadsheet. But that only gives you availability for each of the status columns in Hobbit - which is not very useful, when you want to combine multiple statuses into a single availability measure. The easiest way would be if you know what combinations you want to measure in advance. E.g. if you have 4 webservers handling you business app, and you run an http check on all 4, then you can make a combotest out of those 4. E.g. if you add this to the bbcombotest.cfg file: app01.http=(web01.http+web02.http+web03.http+web04.http)>=2 then you'll get a status for the host "app01" where the "http" column will be green if 2 or more of the web01-04 http columns are green. Then you can run the normal Hobbit availability report, and it will give you the percentage available for the combined test also, which is what you want. If that is not sufficient - e.g. you want to do ad-hoc queries that combine hosts/tests you had not planned in advance - then it gets complicated. The historical logs for each status are in the ~hobbit/data/hist/HOSTNAME.COLUMN files, but they only log when a status changes color. In the Hobbit source, lib/availability.c is the file that deals with calculating availability - you're free to have a look at how it works. It does have a debugging utility built-in, but this won't build in the current version (I rarely use it nowadays). If you pickup the current snapshot you can see how it's used: E.g. running ./lib/availability /var/lib/hobbit/hist/osiris.hobbitd \ `date +%s --date="01 Jan 2006"` `date +%s` will call the routine that determines how much time the hobbitd column has had the various color from Jan 1st until now. All, Here is a note on HP-UX. If you get the error that I did (in the subject) then there is a good chance that you are trying to compile in 64 bit mode. Come to find out trying to compile hobbit (and all of its required libraries) caused problems when linking with HP-UX 64 bit libraries. I have learned (talking with other developers) that the 64 bit libraries on HP-UX leave a lot to be desired. Once I compiled everything 32 bit using 32 bit gcc, I was golden. I would be happy to provide help on HP-UX in the future if anyone is interested. Dynamically named rrd columns

Hi, On my hobbit install I'm monitoring netapp quotas, volumes as well as printer media usage. I would like to graph these items but the names are dynamic dependant on what is picked up through SNMP. Is it possible to use PCRE with NCV formatted rrd definitions and graph them with the dynamic names? Im not sure how this related to the way in which disk names are found and graphed for the disk column? Hope I haven't missed something easy! Thanks, Craig Whilding

Great, thanks! I'm off the next few days doing the Disaster Recovery drill bit, but I'll grab it next Monday and take a look. One of the other problems I have with our current setup this will help with -- we also configure at least one spare access point for a site. Which means that if they need six, we ship seven. Some of the plant people fire up the spare in an office and we can see it. Some of the sites wait until one of the installed systems to break before the open the box with the spare. And them we've got one site that just seems to loose the spares . . . I will say that this kind of support and service far exceeds anything I've seen in a commercial product for years. Thanks! /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg exists; I tried to make it readable and also writeable for all (permissions 666) and the problem remains. But now I tried also to modify the string |"$HOBBIT/server/bin/hobbit-mailack \ --env=$HOBBIT/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg" removing --env option and mailack seems to work; I used the string as in hobbit-mailack.8.html document, So I think there is something wrong in the string sintax (too long?), but I don't know what is the correct solution. The string |"$HOBBIT/server/bin/hobbit-mailack --env=$HOBBIT/server/etc/hobbitserver.cfg" all in one line whithout \ also doesn't work. The problem I've got is that we configure the access points here, then ship them to the remote sites for install. They're down until the guys at the remote site get around to unpacking them, renting a scissor lift, and installing them up in the rafters. Once they're plugged in, they're live and a connectivity failure is a problem. I need to see them go green when they get plugged in and change the config so we'll be notified on an outage. And it looks like my idea of the NK page won't work, either. Back to the drawing board. New problem with acknowledging alerts?

Hi folks, I've started configuring my hobbit-alerts.cfg and have been experimenting with acknowledging alerts. So far, I can't get ACKs to work, and it looks like this has been a problem in the past for previous versions of Hobbit. However, I am using 4.1.2p1 server and clients on all of my machines. When I try to ACK an alert, I get this on my Mac OS X 10.3.9 server in hobbitd.log: 2006-02-20 16:28:07 Cookie 0 not found, dropping ack I researched the old postings on the mailing list, and all of the other questions about this problem seemed to have a valid value for the cookie. What does the 0 zero signify? I looked through the hobbitd source code, but couldn't figure out how to fix the problem. Any ideas? Thank you, Greg SourceHosting.net, LLC Ready. Set. That wont work as clear isn't a state to recover from, only purple, yellow and red I believe. Not sure if this could be changed in the source somewhere?
