Conn Column always red in Hobbit when BB and Hobbit on same machine

Dear All, I had installed Big Brother PE 3.1 and Hobbit on the same machine. I am getting the status (conn column) of all the devices including the BB server as red when I check the hobbit URL. But it is green in bb URL. Pl. help. Pl. note that both BB and hobbit services are up and running on this machine. I understand that it is performing ping check in the background and then display the status for the conn column. I had stopped the BB service and checked but the status remains the same. Does it mean Hobbit is not performing the ping test for the hosts? Can Hobbit and BB work together on same server for same hosts? One more thing I observed is that if I stop the BB server, the bbd column of hobit shows gray, saying that 'Dialup host/service, or test depends on another failed test'. Pl. help. Ladies and Gentlemen of the list I would like to take a moment to publicly thank Henrik for his time. Not only did Henrik write an amazing tool, but he released it as open source, allowing all of us to benefit from his effort. Henrik didn't ask for anything in return. I work for a financial company. Their philosophy is, if it's free, it must be worth exactly what we paid for it. I proved them wrong. I showed them Hobbit is fantastic application which has, in the past 3 months, proven itself over and over. But then at the end of last month, Hobbit had a serious problem. My colleagues laughed. "You running open source. Let's see where you get your support from." I mailed this list, and Henrik jumped into action. We discussed it on the list for a while, then took it offline. Later, we were joined offline by Stefan Loos. Henrik wrote new versions. Inserted more logging. Analysed data we sent him. Debugged his code. Wrote new versions again. We did rebuilds, monitored problems, gathered logs, collected data, and made it all available to Henrik. Eventually, Henrik mailed us a final new hobbitd.c and asked us to rebuild the application. Touch wood, but so far (48 hours later) everything looks good. People, Henrik worked hard on this bug. 12 days, for no reward. He had no problem with his Hobbit, and no incentive to fix ours, except for a commitment to the open source community, and to us. We are not entitled to Henrik's software, bug fixes, support, time or advice. It is something Henrik gives us of his own free will, and for that I am most grateful. Henrik, thank-you. I also work for a financial company and also was given looks of disapproval when I suggested and implemented Hobbit....but we also had similar results! So far we have had three vendors with their "Amazing fix-everything" products that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, require dozens of servers, and an army of people to get them working. ALL of them have been shown the door! The bottom line is that Hobbit just plain works! ...and the support from Henrik and this message board has fixed any problem better and faster than any commercial support I have ever dealt with (try calling HP !! - you better have a lot of time and patience!) The hobbitlaunch.log seems to be logging every task that starts. Is it possible to turn that behavior off? Or at least only log errors? I'm concerned about the level of growth of the log. alan

Current development plans

It seems version 4.0 has reached some stability - there are still a few odd bug reports, but nothing that looks like major problems. So I thought it would be worthwhile to let you know what my plans are. First, I'm currently pretty busy with other stuff so questions raised here are not being answered as quickly as I'd like to. Rest assured that they have not been forgotten, and I will look at all of the reports and questions - but probably not very much for the next week or so. I'm currently working on a 4.0.5 release which will be a performance- improvement release. The current Hobbit code has a flaw in the alert- module, that makes it use much more CPU time than it should - especially if you have a large number of statuses that are in an alert state, but which do not have any recipients defined in hobbit-alerts.cfg. This will be released sometime in June. But summer is upon us, and that means less development activity - so things will slow down as the temperature rises. So don't expect a lot of activity during the summer. When I pick up speed again, I haven't yet decided if I should go for the alert/acknowledge improvements that I've talked about for some time, or if I should tackle the issue of a Hobbit client and get that into a reasonable shape for the more common platforms. I have some ideas for a rather different client architecture than the current one, and the client is also *the* missing piece of the whole Hobbit puzzle - so I could be tempted to get that done. I'd like some feedback on what you find most urgent. Regards, Henrik

Can sub-pages presentations cope with test selection ?

Too bad, I never thinked I needed a third reply. Pick a look at the bbconfig script on www.deadcat.net. I don't know if anyone uses this script to generate hobbit config files, but it should work. You can define precisely which parameters apply to which host, and it will generate bb-hosts, bb-proctab bb-dftab. Depending on the test you wish to disable, you can place a ! Before the name of the test or a noconn to avoid the client to be pinged. For the double entries, I still have warning about thoses, but I didn't have enough time to fix it for the moment. You can generate a page which contains the whole infos the dev needs. Just take enough time to set properly the pages, subpages. To achieve this, I put one test per instances in place, giving 10 columns in the default page of my display server (called 'mafia') : ora1, ora2, ..., ora10. My problem is they all appear in both sub-page, meanwhile I am only interested in half of them... Does anyone know if there could be an issue to my problem? Any idea is welcome ! IN hobbitserver.cfg Ive changer GRAPHS="la,disk::1, ...... This HAS given me one graph per FS in the disk column but not the trends. PS found how to do this with the Hobbit mail-archive search!
