Thanks Jeremy, I should use better word but all you guys are awesome and try to help. I am new this DNS world. Anyways the main thing to monitor the DNS latency. The other day some reason the DNS respond very slowly and many application timed out. And took me time to pinpoint caused by DNS so I want to tackle that issue on the future. Installing xymon/apache as a non-root user

My company changed their policy to not give out root user access on their virtual environments. I need to install both apache, xymon and all related packages on the virtual environment running RedHat. The question is has anyone successfully installed xymon and apache as a non-root user that can share instructions of how to do that. I usually installed xymon and apache with root either manually compiling or using rpm but never as non-root. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Advantages of Xymon vs Nagios?

I've been using Big Brother since 1999, and Xymon for the last couple of years (on a different project at the lab), but recently, a team member has suggested that we switch infrastructure monitoring to Nagios, which he's been using on other systems he manages elsewhere in the lab. He's using something called OMD (the Open Monitoring Distribution - from http://omdistro.org/ ), which is supposed to improve on the complexity of using Nagios. Our management would like us to do a comparison to see if we should switch from our old Big Brother monitoring (which is still running well) to a more up to date Xymon or convert instead to OMD/Nagios. Looking for information on Xymon and Nagios comparisons, I found this comment from Henrik in the Xymon mailing list archive: http://lists.xymon.com/archive/2006-June/007530.html that mentions the ease of setup and use of Xymon as compared to Nagios, but that comment is nine years old. Xymon notifcations disappear due to base64 encoding

This morning, one of our servers was down and we (the admins) didn't immediately know because of a long chain of events. After spending the morning drilling down step by step, the issue was that Verizon's SMS email gateway doesn't accept base64 encoded messages, and the message being sent was base64 encoded because of <CR> (aka "\r" or ASCII 13) in the message. We could reproduce this issue with the following PHP script used at the command line as a Verizon customer. I don't know if this is a recent change at Verizon, and don't really have a way to find out. // GENERAL ENVIRONMENT CentOS 6, recently updated. Postfix is the MTA PHP5 // THIS WON'T WORK Note the "\r" that causes postfix to base64 encode the message. file.php's contents, 1 line: <?php echo "Test of bad message\r\n"; ?> $ php file.php | mail -s test yournumber at vtext.php // THIS WORKS FINE, Note the lack of "\r", postfix sends this as text/plain, 7 bit encoding. file.php's contents, 1 line: <?php echo "Test of bad message\n"; ?> $ php file.php | mail -s test yournumber at vtext.php We've wasted time playing with a wrapper for the mail command that would strip out the "\r" in the alerts but this has, so far, proven fruitless. Messages sent via the Sprint SMS gateway go through just fine. Wondering if anybody else has seen this issue, or has any idea what the best way to handle it might be? Thanks, Ben

Hello, I need a help regarding generation of xml from the xymon status. When I run the below command in xymon server, It works fine. */usr/local/xymon/client/bin/xymon xymon_server "hobbitdxboard host=hostname test=testname" * But when I try to use the same command in a machine where xymon client is installed, its not retrieving any data. Hey everyone, I'm trying out the PS client again after using it 1-2 years ago and it causing too many problems. I'm hoping the impact on the clients will have been lessened since I tried it last. I have the PS client installed and configured, but I never show any connection to the xymon server while monitoring with tcpdump. Also, I never get any files created in the temp directory.
