Just a quick question, if the time is off by a few minutes in our xymon server, will correcting the time have an adverse effect on the rrd graphs other than a missing time period?

Hi, I have a request for a change for future xymon releases. First a little more info about our situation and the reason for the request. We currently still are using xymon version 4.2.3. This because we successfully made some adjustments to the source code of that version to allow two new columns to show for linux based servers (For windows machines this is already implemented). It concerns the Timediff and uptime columns, that we split from the cpu column. The reason we made these adjustments (uptime) is because our virtual machines boot really fast and the conn test often doesn't detect any downtime. We then can capture this with the uptime column. (if uptime < 30min => alert) The reason we wanted the timediff column separately is because some machines require correct times and seen that it is combined with the cpu column this could create confusion and doesn't provide an easy overview that we are used from xymon. (Each individual peace of info = separate column) We are eager to upgrade to the latest xymon release but are unable to make the same adjustments because some functions changed within the source code. (We did try though) We currently also don't have anybody employed who has the necessary indebt knowledge to make these kind of adjustments within the code. I can provide some more info on the changes that we performed on version 4.2.3 if required. Please let me know your thoughts. Regards, Jef Jagers

monitoring /var/log/messages for new occurence of a string

Hi, The answer to this is probably in the archives already, but I didn't find it. I'm running Xymon 4.2.3 server on RHEL, and running Big Brother on the clients. I setup the bb-msgstab file on a Linux client to alert for a specific string in /var/log/messages. What I'm seeing is that anytime /var/log/messages is updated, we get an alert for the string we are testing for, even if that string occurred hours ago. Is there a way to parse the file to only send an alert if it is a new occurrence of the string? We only rotate this file once a week, so we might get an alert on something that's a day old. Thanks! The problem is in the dh_install calls in the rules. web acks sometimes don't work

We have had intermittent issues with web acks working on version 4.3.7 also. some graphs 5 hours behind

We are working on upgrading, but in the mean time I'm trying to keep our Xymon 4.2.3 on an older SPARC running and making sense. So, for some as yet undetermined reason some (but not all) rrd files have started being updated about 5 hours behind. I.e. we can correlate events that we know happened at certain times with the graphs so the clock isn't somehow messed up (besides it looks ok to us in the shell), and when I do an rrdtool dump it is clear that the data is being added from 5 hours ago, or at least the last entry in the 12 hour database is stamped from about 5 hours earlier. It appears to only be affecting the rrd files for the graphs that are only on the trends page. I.e. graphs that appear on the test pages (e.g. memory, cpu, disk) are not affected. The two hobbit_rrd processes are running with 30+ hours and 640 minutes of cpu time according to top. The system has been up for 30 days but Xymon was restarted about 3 weeks ago. The effect of this is the graphs, of course, for the data that is behind looks like it stopped recording 5 hours ago. As we watch it the data appears but there is this gap for the last 5 hours. So the customers are uncomfortable with this. My questions are: What can be done about it? I hesitate to stop and start Xymon for fear of loosing all of that data. What can be the cause? I know the server is slightly overloaded and has been for a few months, but this is really weird. We also have been getting warnings (yellow) from bbtest Whoops ! bb failed to send message - timeout Which results in gaps in the data, but those are usually only a few minutes in duration and are only occasional. Hi, We are experiencing problems with ack-ing failures. how to disable a host via email in xymon

Does anyone have the syntax to disable a host via email in xymon? I used to do it in Hobbit but can not remember the syntax for the subject line. It used to be something like !RE: host=DISABLE or DISABLE=host or something.
