Hi, in another mail thread, another monitoring tool (Zenoss) was mentioned which had the advantage of “no hand editing of config files”. Text based config files have their ups and downs - they are infinitely flexible and can adapt to all sorts of weird ways of defining your setup, but it is also easier to "get it wrong" and put something in there which doesn't work. Even happens to me occasionally. It's the age-old debate over whether something is "powerful" or "dangerous". I am currently working on the next Xymon version (except I've been swamped with for-pay work the past couple of months ... and a hefty round of lay-offs in other departments than mine). This involves a complete rewrite of the network testing tool, and for this rewrite I've started using an SQLite database for storing some intermediate data used by the network tester, instead of keeping it in a bunch of temporary text-files. And it has made me consider the idea of using a database for storing at least some of the configuration - first of all the hosts.cfg configuration of hosts, IP-adresses and network tests. This would make some things simpler, others a bit more complex - "xymongrep", for instance - but would also make it a lot easier to provide a GUI for managing what hosts are being monitored. This is not going to happen anytime soon, but since the subject was up in the air - what do you think about it ? Is it a major problem that Xymon has all configuration in text files ? How many of you auto-generate the Xymon config by extracting the information from a database already ? Just looking for some feedback... Regards, Henrik

Xymon rename - bug?

Hello, Using Xymon 4.3.7 I renamed one of our reported clients: Xymon <server IP> "rename library-4a lib-srvr4a" This seemed to change all the client files on the Xymon server except for the files in 'data/hist'. In there I now have both 'library-4a' and 'lib-srvr4a' files for each of the client tests. I have modified hosts.cfg and analysis.cfg for the new client name, and restarted both the Xymon client and server. I have no idea if this is a bug or not. MAXMSG_* not working correctly?

Ignoring a Service

Hey, I need some help to ignore this service. Have tried many different ways of putting this in the code, but nothing seems to work. Trying to ignore smtp for one host because it alerts every time it turns on to send an email. Here is what i have in the alerts.cfg: HOST=%(server*|server2*) IGNORE HOST=server* SERVICE=smtp MAIL coreitstaff at ucsd.edu REPEAT=999999 RECOVERED So the way i understand this is that it should be ignoring smtp but still emailing about the other services. analysis.cfg: connection test

Hello all, I have the following in my analysis.cfg: HOST=HOST.DOMAIN.ORG DS conn tcp.conn.rrd:sec >0.03 COLOR=red TEXT="Response time &V exceeds &U seconds" It should the Xymon-test let go to red if the response time exceeds 30 milliseconds - this is working. My problem is, that I would need Xymon to go red if this persist for more than i. e. 5 minutes. Would that be possible? I've looked in the man page of analysis.cfg, but I didn't find something about such a feature. I know from alerts.cfg there's a keyword "DURATION". I think that would be something around what I would need here... Does Xymon have this feature and I just didn't find it until now? Or would it be better to let Xymon go yellow it the above matches and configure the needed mechanism in the alerts.cfg? I. e. send out an eMail-notification if the yellow status persists for more than 5 minutes? Patch - timefunc.c (was Xymon on RHEL3 - not working?)

Hello, Attached is a patch for consideration. I am using it on my RHEL3 Xymon (4.3.7) client to cater for the problems with 'clock_gettime'. The timers now basically use clock_gettime if it is defined and returns a zero code, else they use 'gettimeofday' but if that gives an error then 'time' is used. Windows Client

Xymon on RHEL3 - not working?

Hello, I have Xymon 4.3.7 running as server on a CentOS 6 box - no problems. I have a mixture of RHEL3, 4, 5 and 6, and CentOS 5 & 6 clients. These all work fine except for the RHEL3 client. That one shows purple for the cpu, disk, files, memory and procs tests. The tests seem to have picked up some data from the first run after starting up, but since then they seem to have reported nothing (and hence purple). I have been looking into this for a while now, and am at a bit of a loss as to why just this one client is having a problem. I have stopped the firewall on both client and server, but that makes no difference. A tcpdump shows that data is being sent to/from the client/server. I can see no obvious difference between this client and any of the others. Anyone any ideas about this? content test

I'm trying to do a content check, but all I'm seeing under the "content" column is: No output received from server The http test associated with the content check is working correctly, the http headers are being returned. I can retrieve the page using wget from the same server that I'm running the content test on. I've tried changing the user-agent. I even set the user-agent to "Xymon" with wget and was able to retrieve the page. Anybody have any idea what is going one here? Thanks, Larry Barber
