Fail over?

So, how are others doing this? I have a server set up here in my primary data center. We're monitoring a few thousand hosts right now with a large number of custom externals. I've been tasked with setting up a fail-over or disaster response server in case our primary data center has issues. All of our clients are currently configured to send their messages to the IP address of our primary server. Now, I could just copy the bb-hosts file to the DR site, but then I would only get the network tests since the clients all report to the primary. Would I use bbproxy to do this? But if I install bbproxy on the primary, I won't be proxying the messages if my primary goes down... :( -- Stewart Larsen

Custom graph no rrd files

TEST2RRD="cpu=la,...,ncv,grpwiseusr=ncv" NCV_grpwiseusr="*:GAUGE" GRAPHS="la,ncv,...,grpwiseusr" ..................... Should I at this point see rrd files ? I see them for the built in scripts. martin

Hi all, I've added a custom test to a host that sends (performance) information about the mysql daemon that's running on it. The data on the status page of that mysql test looks like this: threads : 53 queries per sec : 386 slow queries : 0 All values are absolute (GAUGE) so I added this NCV tag in hobbitserver.cfg: NCV_mysql="threads:GAUGE,queriespersec:GAUGE,slowqueries:GAUGE" I also added "mysql=ncv" to the TEST2RRD list in hobbitserver.cfg I kicked the hobbit daemons so the hobbitserver.cfg file would be read again. The RRD file is created on the hobbit server after the client has sent its data. When I check with `rrdtool dump mysql.rrd` I only see the first two datasources (threads and queriespersec). The third/last datasource isn't created/updated in the RRD file, although you'd expect that according to the NCV_mysql tag in hobbitserver.cfg. Is there a limitation in the maximum number of datasources the NCV graphing can handle? I'm running hobbit 4.2.0 on both client and server BTW. Thanks in advance, Br. Dennis

I think this has discussed but Id like to see new standard icon/color clear is defined as no data and Ive been using that as color for test that can't go red/yellow or there is a state change and I want to know but it no a problem, like a root login. Services timeout

Good morning everyone, I have been looking around the newsgroups and have not found a way to set individual timeout intervals for all the different services. I know I can set them all in the [bbnet] section of hobbitlaunch. Is there a clever way to do this that I am missing? Getting a list of all tests

Ok, Im re-writing a Bigbrother script for Hobbit. I need a little help. The current script gets a list of all currents tests performed by doing an ls on the %BBVAR/log directory and using sed to pull the test from each file. Example: ls -1 $BB_LOGS_DIR | awk -F. '{print $2}' | sort -u results in conn cpu disk dns errpt ftp http memory msgs procs ssh svcs telnet Is there a way to do this in hobbit using hobbitd_channel or some other prog? Thanks Trent

FILE check says "No files checked", but things appear configured correctly

I have a FILE test that is not working ... the webpage displays "No files checked" on one of two identicallly monitored servers. The second server works just fine. The two servers are configured like this in client-local.cfg on the Hobbit host: [spiexp1] file:/tmp/dfh.test log:/var/adm/messages:10240 [wcscbe5] file:/tmp/dfh.test log:/var/adm/messages:10240 And like this in hobbit-clients.cfg: HOST=spiexp1,wcscbe5 FILE /tmp/dfh.test size>1K LOAD 40.0 70.0 DISK /expsys 95 98 DISK /expert 95 98 DISK /inadsb 90 95 DISK * IGNORE I can see the meta-data for my test file, /tmp/dfh.test, in the "client data" display for each server, so both of them apparently got the message and are uploading the required data: [file:/tmp/dfh.test] type:100000 (file) mode:644 (-rw-r--r--) linkcount:1 owner:12319 (haertig) group:906 (tsc) size:0 clock:1193264890 (2007/10/24-16:28:10) atime:1193257900 (2007/10/24-14:31:40) ctime:1193257900 (2007/10/24-14:31:40) mtime:1193257900 (2007/10/24-14:31:40) But spiexp1 is saying "No files checked" whereas wcscbe5 is working just as I'd expect. Both servers were given two hours to settle out all the upload/download handshaking stuff before I checked the results. Is there something I'm missing in my setup? Both servers are configured very similarly, but they're not identical twins. They run Solaris 7 (yeah, don't tell me - I know it's old!). Possibly related, wcscbe5 shows the output of the 'top' command on it's 'cpu' column on the webpage, but spiexp1 does not (the graph is there for spiexp1, but not the 'top' data, however spiexp1's 'top' data IS in the "client data" ... just not on the displayed webpage). Extra bb2

Hi, I want to create an extra bb2-page which contains Only red, and maybe purple. I use the 'All non-green view' but i need one page with only critical alarms, and one with yellow also so I can be proactive when things are About to happen but not yet critical. So, is there an easy way to create two of those bb2-pages with different settings? Regards /Peter

[hobbit] Weird BBCmd Issue

Same issue with bb, we used 1.9btf as well. In hobbit it just my 3ware script that doing this, if I use my perl wrappers it dosnt fail. It actually pulls data for 20 minutes then goes purple. It did at one time turn purple after 4 hours. I try to run the script from the console it errors out, but when I do bbcmd bash it works fine for another 20minutes or the four hours as I explained. I think the default setting would be to go purple (no report) after 20 minutes - 5 minute polls, 4 polls. When I was using Big Brother 1.9btf I was having a lot of purples come up when the ISP was having issues. I really can't explain why as the detailed page was able to do the tests and report, but it likely was that it wasn't in a timely fashion.
