Decommission a monitored host

What are thoughts on the best way to decommission a monitored server in hobbit? I would like to remove it from monitoring since it no longer exists. But want to keep all historical hobbit data for the server incorporated into all reports for "X" amount of time. Then retire this data off after that "X" amount of time to some kind of historical archive so its still available if needed. Maybe using some kind of historical reporting tool in hobbit. Anyone doing anything similar or have thoughts on the best way to achieve this? Thanks Trent

I am trying to write a proc rule to catch all the hosts in clearcase server page. bbtest rrd file isn't getting updated anymore

Yesterday afternoon my bbtest rrd file stopped getting updated with new data, even though the bbtest-net test is running fine and the latest status update is displayed under the bbtest column. All of the other rrd files for my hobbit server are updating just fine and do not have any issues. I added --debug to the CMD line for the rrdstatus module in hobbitlauch.cfg, but nothing bbtest related is reported in the rrd-status.log. The bbtest data shows up fine when I watch the status channel, which make sense since the data is making it the webpage. What can I check next? Seems like there is a breakdown between what bbtest data goes into the status channel and what is rrdstatus is getting from the the status channel, but I don't know how to drill into that area. Using Hobbit to monitor IP switches

Request: Adding bb-services entries for mail submission and smtps (587 and 465)

The bb-services entry for smtps rightly indicates that smtps does not have an IANA-approved port number, however the "standard" port used as the default for most clients is what's generally run -- port 465. Also, port 587 _is_ a standard for "submission" or "msa"... first time injection of messages via authorized or authenticated SMTP. It would be nice to see both of these supported by default in hobbit's config. A patch to do so is below. Advice on how to handle HA monitoring

We have 2 hosts, HostA and HostB. They are part of an HA cluster via HP ServiceGuard. There is a virtual IP and DNS name of "virtual" that automatically goes to whichever of HostA and HostB is the primary at the time. I am currently monitoring both HostA and HostB via Hobbit. Currently HostA is the primary, and I am doing various PROC checks. Currently on HostB, I am not doing process checks. My problem is, how do I smoothly handle a failover scenario (HostB becoming the primary)? When a failover occurs, all of the procs on HostA are stopped (either by the server crashing, or manualy by ServiceGuard), and the same procs are started up on HostB. I'm trying to think of ways to monitor both hosts, but only monitor procs on the one that is primary. So far the best I can come up with is to run the hobbit clients in local mode, and maybe have the ServiceGuard scripts swap out the config files and restart the Hobbit clients when there is a failover. That would probably work, BUT in this case the Hobbit homdir is also the same (SAN mount) on both machines, so moving or editing a file on one does the same on the other :( Simply shutting down the hobbit client on the non-primary is not an option, as then it would no longer be monitored at all. Any ideas? :) -Charles

It's very early to try this, only do it if you're really adventurous. I only started this Saturday, so it hasn't seen any real testing. Nonetheless, I setup a small test run of it this afternoon, and so far it appears to be working as intended. If you do want to try it out, get the snapshot version which will be available in a couple of hours. The reason for doing this is that our network people are having problems collecting statistics with MRTG. Basically, their MRTG server is extremely overloaded, and besides that they'd rather not have to worry about setting up MRTG and maintaining a website for it. So I was asked if it was possible for Hobbit to handle the ~10.000 datasets they are currently collecting with MRTG. Of course, that was a challenge I had to meet :-) I've chosen to be a bit more thorough than MRTG in the data collection. MRTG by default collects only the in/out byte counts from a device; you can do that with Hobbit's new snmpcollect, but a better choice is to grab the entire set of data present in the "interfaces" MIB. This includes some interesting data, e.g. how many bad packets arrived over the interface, how many were discarded, and what the current output queue length is. snmpcollect uses a configuration file that looks like this: [localhost] version=2 community=public mrtg=2 IF-MIB::ifInOctets.2 IF-MIB::ifOutOctets.2 Main IO # ifmib=2 LAN # ifmib=(eth0) LAN # ifmib=[0:e:a6:ce:d6:85] LAN ifmib={172.16.10.100} LAN So for a host, you define the SNMP version you want to use (currently v1 and v2c only), the community name, and optionally an IP address for it. Then you can request snmpcollect to fetch either a set of data in MRTG form, or you can fetch the entire interface-MIB set of data for a router interface / switch port. There are different ways to define what interface you want the data for - by interface number, description, MAC address or IP. snmpcollect grabs the data and sends it to Hobbit in a "data" message; this is picked up by the current hobbitd_rrd module and put into trend graphs. Right now it just collects the data. I have some ideas to add monitoring so it might trigger an alert if the error-rate of an interface goes up, or the traffic exceeds certain limits (min/max). Nothing definite yet. Oh - and the current snapshot blindly assumes you have Net-SNMP installed; if not, it won't compile. No need to tell me that - I know. nstab.html not working

I am running BBGEN with the options, "--nstab=nstab.html". Seems the HTML is not being outputted correctly. Missing ">Device.test". Is this a bug ?
