One thing I did forget to mention is you will need to run the esxcfg-firewall command to open up TCP port 1984 in and out on each of your ESX servers. Compile a copy of hobbit on a RedHat ES3 or ES4 server and just copy it over to your ESX servers, VMWare is a RedHat Linux Kernel. I have it running on 12 of my ESX servers and it works great. hobbit not adding negative values to rrd database

Hi I have a temperature monitor for outside temperature. i cant get it to work when the temperature is negative. the rrdtool reports this <rrd> <version> 0003 </version> <step> 300 </step>  <lastupdate> 1170011401 </lastupdate>  <ds> <name> Utetemp </name> <type> GAUGE </type> <minimal_heartbeat> 600 </minimal_heartbeat> <min> -4.0000000000e+01 </min> <max> NaN </max>  <last_ds> UNKN </last_ds> <value> 4.0000000000e+00 </value> <unknown_sec> 0 </unknown_sec> </ds> if i send positive values it gets updated but when it is negative nothing happens. any ideas? Hobbit client and large networks

Have used Hobbit with BB clients at a previous gig, but now looking to set one up with Hobbit clients at a new gig. This will be an installation of close to 1000 nodes. Having started testing using the clients, have some concerns and questions: 1) I am concerned that the server performs all the proc and disk tests... I'm concerned that several hundred servers will overwhelm the Hobbit server. I see the client can be configured to run the checks locally, provided the configuration is copied to the clients. Has anyone any practical experience with this many clients, and whether local checks are better in this case? 2) Most of the servers are Web and database servers... meaning that port, proc, and netstat reports are very large. I've seen so far that the Hobbit client data sent to the server is almost 500k or larger, causing truncation problems and problems with the server-side checks (proc tests did not work until I used either client-local tests, or disabled the ports client data). Can client data be disabled without affecting the ability to run checks? Is there a way to streamline the data so that effective monitoring is possible, without sending 1/2 MB data for each client every 5 minutes? Nothing is written to hobbitfetch.log. But I do get correct statuses for the few hosts that I am polling. I have 4 hosts that I poll using hobbitfetch. I think there will be just two more. But they are all internet facing, so keeping them up is a priority... Hello and sorry for any unnecessary noise. I have read from the docs about a hobbit-client to install on client machines, but I can't find a "how-to" or even where it is located. So,... 1. Can someone tell me where the client is located. 2. How to install on a Linux machine. I am asking for a little more than "grab this file and untar...bang your done" I am somewhat new to hobbit and need a little more detail. Thanks ~ Don

TOP & Memory Test

When you look at the cpu test, it shows top output for the processes taking up the most cpu. Can the same be done for the Memory Test, but showing top information of the processes taking up the most memory? Thanks..James
