Hello, I just started getting this "hobbit_client Program crashed Fatal signal caught" But it is still running. It shows up as red on the page. Do you know how I can fix this? Thank you in advance, Rebecca

parsing notifications.log

Has anyone made a script that parses hobbit's notifications.log to create a report for the day? I was thinking something along the lines of a perl script that parses the notifications.log file to create a report that specifies what pages were sent out, how much time passed before the alert recovered, etc I didn't really want to reinvent the wheel and code the script if someone else has already done so So.. is there such a script in existence? And if so, can you share it ? :) Val

Integrating Hobbit with Ticketing system(s) / Feature Request

Some time ago (years actually), I integrated Big Brother with "Request Tracker", which is a popular open source helpdesk ticketing system. This was done by CCing hobbit alerts to the ticketing system, and the creation of a custom plugin that parsed the incoming mails and automatically created a ticket for red alerts. The plugin was "smart" enough so that when a recovery message arrived, it would auto-resolve the initial ticket created from the first alert. I am now looking again at integrating Hobbit with a ticketing system, but this time with "Jira" (http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/) Jira has a very useful API as well as an RCP/SOAP interface, so doing something similar to what I did with RT should be relatively simple. However, in going over the code in my head (I havn't written it yet), I see a problem. I believe that Hobbit is different from BB in that recovery pages are not sent with an ID (and I think if you forced it with a script the ID is "-1") which makes it impossible to relate them to the origional alert. Is there any simple way that we could have access to this ID number, or does Hobbit simply not track it? Otherwise I may have to do something like query hobbitboard and look for a hostname.service that matches the resolved message, and I'd rather not do that as it will just slow things down and add extra complexity. -Charles

The question was "But, I don't understand, how the traceroute works when the host is up, but when the host is down it times out???" and remarked on the 30 lines of output in a time out situation. Although I cited Fedora 8 as the page I was quoting, the traceroute documentation for most any modern distro contains the explanation about the 30-hop default and the behavior when the tracerouted host is not reached. Sorry if I wasn't clear. Conn test problems

I've been getting a lot of these recently. A lot of the time I'll get a good 3/4 of the hosts I'm monitoring like this, other days it is just one or two. I can't seem to find any pattern to it. I'm very confident it isn't network related as it happens to the first entry, Hobbit server. I just can't imagine why it would have issues getting to 127.0.0.1! I was also under the impression that the ping test is done every 60s or 120s so these tests just can't be true positive results. Poking around I also found that the test to my hobbit server (this is 127.0.0.1 mind you) went up in early December. risks of using 4.3 snapshot in production?

I'm about to upgrade the OS on my production hobbit server and was considering using a 4.3 snapshot instead of my usual 4.2 setup. I've been experiencing a memory leak with hobbitd_rrd in 4.2 that was caused when I applied the split-ncv patch last year, and it'd be nice to pick up the fix that is already in 4.3. The 4.3 snapshots I've tested seem ok, but the data set they are working with is much smaller than my prod server uses. Looking over the change logs on the hobbit demo site, it seems like snmp is where most of the devel work is happening and everything else is unchanged. We don't need hobbit for snmp right now, so I'm ok if that part doesn't work. Is there a list of outstanding bugs that I can look over? And of course, the obvious--is this a stupid idea? Any input is welcome. Thanks, Tom
