There is no secondary xymon server but there is a big brother running. My task at the moment is to gradually retire big brother and move everything to Xymon but I still have a LONG way to go. | When I had accidentally restricted access to our Xymon server, I | received errors such as 'connection refused'. In your case you get a | timeout, which tends to imply it is not connecting. I haven't done anything like that in my case. After running: $killall -9 xymond The main xymon page gets updated but the xymond column is yellow. (???????) I am full of questionmarks.

Hi everyone 2 days ago I updated xymon to the latest version:4.3.10 and for some reason unknown to me xymond stopped updating the hosts.cfg file. Plagued by purple

All - Am fairly new to Xymon and apologize if this is documented somewhere and I missed it. I have inherited a Xymon server (4.3.3 on Solaris 10) which shows itself as having about half its tests as "purple", the other half as green. As far as I can tell, everything's running just fine. It seems to be a simple data refresh problem of some sort, but haven't been able prove my hunch. The problem started after a reboot of the server. Everything came up OK, except for the following list of "missing" tests: Purple Tests: iostat iostat2 mem2 meta nfs prtdiag raid sar tm zones Green Tests: bbd conn cpu disk http info memory msgs ntp ports procs ssh trends I've restarted the server: ("$xymon_home/xymon.sh restart") and tried to find something in the logs, but am not making ground on this fast enough. Using the "link@" value in hosts.cfg

Hi folks. I was studying the xymon.com pages and examples of the hosts.cfg settings. In the hosts.cfg file there, I saw this host line with a "link at 90.184.110.202" as below: page services Services group-compress <font size="+1">Network</font> 147.29.31.155 adsl.hswn.dk # NET:home noconn testip link at 90.184.110.202 It seems as though this creates another column for "link" in the xymon webpages. Does anyone know what or how the "link@" value works and how to configure, or where the doc is to explain it? Thanks, Don K

Convert old hobbit to xymon

Dear all, I used to run hobbit on a HP-Unix box. I think it was like 4.2 . In the beginning of 2009 I got ill stayed in hospital a couple of months. In the same time my HP-UX box crashed. Now I want to start again with Xymon on Ubuntu. I think I have all the old configfiles on a tarfile in Windows. But I think a lot has happened with the configfiles. I remember that the should be some script to conver old files. Very long message despite FORMAT=SMS

Hi. There seems to be some problem with the FORMAT=SMS parameter in alerts.cfg on 4.3.10. We are getting very long text messages, despite using FORMAT=SMS in the alerts config file. The alert was regarding the msgs test for one server, and the message was over 4000 characters. This is the line that generates the alert: PAGE=DM,Network COLOR=red SCRIPT /usr/local/bin/sendsms.sh $DELTA_JOSJ DURATION>7 FORMAT=SMS REPEAT=15 Regards, Johan Sjöberg

Time Correction

Just a quick question, if the time is off by a few minutes in our xymon server, will correcting the time have an adverse effect on the rrd graphs other than a missing time period?

New xymon Feature

Hi, I have a request for a change for future xymon releases. First a little more info about our situation and the reason for the request. We currently still are using xymon version 4.2.3. This because we successfully made some adjustments to the source code of that version to allow two new columns to show for linux based servers (For windows machines this is already implemented). It concerns the Timediff and uptime columns, that we split from the cpu column. The reason we made these adjustments (uptime) is because our virtual machines boot really fast and the conn test often doesn't detect any downtime. We then can capture this with the uptime column. (if uptime < 30min => alert) The reason we wanted the timediff column separately is because some machines require correct times and seen that it is combined with the cpu column this could create confusion and doesn't provide an easy overview that we are used from xymon. (Each individual peace of info = separate column) We are eager to upgrade to the latest xymon release but are unable to make the same adjustments because some functions changed within the source code. (We did try though) We currently also don't have anybody employed who has the necessary indebt knowledge to make these kind of adjustments within the code. I can provide some more info on the changes that we performed on version 4.2.3 if required. Please let me know your thoughts. Regards, Jef Jagers

monitoring /var/log/messages for new occurence of a string

Hi, The answer to this is probably in the archives already, but I didn't find it. I'm running Xymon 4.2.3 server on RHEL, and running Big Brother on the clients. I setup the bb-msgstab file on a Linux client to alert for a specific string in /var/log/messages. What I'm seeing is that anytime /var/log/messages is updated, we get an alert for the string we are testing for, even if that string occurred hours ago. Is there a way to parse the file to only send an alert if it is a new occurrence of the string? We only rotate this file once a week, so we might get an alert on something that's a day old. Thanks!
