hello on xymon 4.3.0 this config work : hosts.cfg : 127.0.0.1 test1 # telnet 127.0.0.1 test2 # telnet 0.0.0.0 test # combo.cfg : test.test = test1.telnet + test2.telnet > 1 on xymon >= 4.3.7 this is not working. test1.telnet and test2.telnet got clear status so the main status is green and not red. Any idee ? thx for your help oau

Check DNS Question

Hi there, i have a problem with checking dns on my nameservers. Maybe i didnt get it right I have some nameservers running and would like to check there availability via xymon, so i added a line like xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx ns1.my.domnain # dns=a:www.my.domain to the bb-hosts file. I thought this should work. But while adding a new server, which actualy does not have any dns server running, not even installed, the check turned green. So to me it seems that it does not check the host. Any idea? Kind regards Jörg

I have a quick question, is it possible to form an email to acknowledge an alert without receiving the email first? In hobbit we were able to compose a message to disable a server and all of the checks for a certain time period. I can not seem to get the subject line correct for it to disable a server, does anyone have an example they could share?

how to merge allevent files ?

Should not be a big problem. The procedure is similar to version upgrade, when you install it into new home (take a look my post 18.04.2012) For merge 1. make a list of all files you need to copy to new server a) jusr files that belong to exact server and metrics like rra, logs,.... b) entries in configuration files 2. Review all steps to add new host and metric at new server 3. Prepare new cfg: 3.1 prepare copy of existing cfg files at new mon.server (cp ./etc ./etc_merged) 3.2 add 1.b entries into config files 3.3. if plan migrate one by one - mark with comments records in hosts.cfg file 4. Copy history files 4.1. Automate (shell script + test it!!) 1.a files copying to new server 4.2. Test with one 4.3. and copy them all or one by one (I mean files for every monitored server or/and metric) 5. Update cfg. files at moniting server with prepared copy (and uncomment entries in hosts.cfg file 6. Update monitoring server address at each client server with xymon client to send data to new server (or set to send to both for some time) 7. Disable servers monitoring at old server 8. Check all OK for some time 9. Update monitoring server address at each client server with xymon client to send data to new monitoring server only (if used to send to both for some time) 10. archive (tar + gz) history and cfg files at old monitoring server and mark in calendar when to remove them at all. BBWin Externals

Hey, Does anyone know if it's possible to build an externals test and have it sent in with the regular collected data with BBWin? I have a machine with a large number of cores and BBWin's CPU section is unable to handle reporting on it. I've made an external whose output exactly matches the CPU section of the data collected and sent to Xymon by BBWin but I'm struggling on how to get the data sent to Xymon. When I write out the data to a file in %BBWIN%/tmp it is sent to the Xymon server but it seems like nothing is happening with it. Likely because the server is expecting a full external test and I'm not sending like that. Any ideas? Thanks! I built a new Xymon server this week with v4.3.7 and all looks good. Can I copy event history from my current Xymon/Hobbit v4.2.2 server to the new ? I did try copying files/directories over from /xymon/data/<hist>&<histlogs>, but that didn't seem to work... I created the .procmail file as per the man pages, installed procmail but nothing seems to work when replying to the alerts sent by my xymon server. The "Mailbox" in the .procmail file is it a file or a directory? Does anyone who has this working know what the permissions and owner ship of the .procmail file should be? Everyone on this mailing list has been instrumental with helping me through some of the issue I have had. I wish I were more of a Linux guru but I am not and the company I work for does not have a true Linux engineer, he has less experience then I do.

Is there a good generic "os" to > use? Note that if you use "status" messages (like devmon does) you either need to handle the colour/status yourself, or create a "DS" definition to analyse your RRD files. Instead, using properly formatted "client" messages means that xymond_client will handle this for you. Most appliance devices are Linux, so that might be appropriate. It doesn't matter very much, as long as the format of the client message matches the OS. Apart from the common OSes (linux, irix, darwin, solaris, aix, openbsd, etc) there are some other interesting ones that you could use as appropriate: snmpcollect, powershell, win32_bbwin. If you use an OS that Xymon doesn't know about, it will silently ignore the client message. Note that if you plan on adding metrics for other resources, some of the OS handlers support more than others. The Solaris processor handles 19 different client stanzas, second is AIX and FreeBSD with 17, then SCO with 16. Linux, Windows and OpenBSD all support 15 different stanzas in the client data. Most of the extra stanzas in Solaris (prtconf, iostatdisk) are probably too OS-specific to be useful to you. For example, the unix_disk_report() function call silently returns if there is no "[df]" stanza in the client data, and it appears that the corresponding code for memory, procs and netstat all do the same. I can't say for certain that you can get by with only the "[df]" stanza, but it's worth a shot, and I'd be surprised if it didn't work.
