Did I miss something? I've a lot of experience with IBM's HACMP for AIX, and getting a clustered configuration working as desired is not a trivial procedure. Henrik -- check me on this: it's my impression we no longer need a 'BBPAGER' entry on the client-side bb-hosts because the hobbit server passes all potentially alertable statuses to hobbit-alert and it decides if an alert is really required. Brian -- no offense, but I would rather categorise your configuration as "active/inactive". I'm looking at doing an "active/passive" cluster when time frees up -- about a month from now. The difference? I'm running two hobbit/apache instances all the time -- but the 'passive' (fallover) side is not doing alerting or network tests. It does build displays (it's my technical documentation server as well) and it does keep both history and rrd data updated. Both hosts show up on the client side as 'BBDISPLAY'. On failover it will take over the IP address for the hobbit display and re-launch hobbit with network testing and alerting enabled. Depending on host count and test count, this might be a bad idea -- but we've only got about 300 entries in bb-hosts. So -- thanks ever so much, again, for providing this -- it will make my life ever so much easier next month when I get the time to automate the failover environment. How do you automate this? I do this on about 15 servers once per week and archive the previous version as systemname.html.<creationdate> and have been working on a script to generate the changes from week to week. Paul

Can someone provide some hobbit-alerts.cfg examples that show a setup similar to BB as in: hostgroup services 1st pager delay hg-ntprod;;procs disk svcs;;*;*;pg-supportemail:~10-30 pg-ntadminpager:~05-10 pg-oncallpager:~30-60 Can someone also provide an example of using the PAGE or SUBPAGE instead of providing a HOST list with conventions similar to te above? Can I mix both in the alerts config file? and for my really dumb question of the day - is there a line continuation character that can be used, recognized and properly parsed?

Any other host I plug in to it works fine. Bretheren -- I've found this to be a very useful tool; I run it once a week on every system I've got and scp the result over to www/notes as <systemname.html> so BB (and now hobbit) auto-generates the link to it. Plugins for SAP, Oracle, Informix, MC/SG, FibreChannel, TIP/ix, Mass Storage like XP48/128/256/512/1024/12000, EVA3000/EVA5000, Network Node Manager and OmniBack/DataProtector etc. are included. There's a new release-candidate available at http://www.hswn.dk/beta/ Changes from RC1 include: * Fixed lockup when hobbitd loaded a checkpoint file containing scheduled disable-requests. * The [disk1] graph definition was broken. * Using the "apache" test on a host with no HTTP tests now works, and does not result in a bogus http column. * The bbmessage CGI was using a broken method to fetch the POST data. * hobbit-enadis could crash. * Some AIX installations apparently do not have atoll(). Use the Hobbit internal atoll() routine on AIX. * The "apache" RRD handler now recognizes reports from Apache 1.x for Busy/Idle server processes. * The "sendmail" RRD handler will create RRD-files with room for the "msgsqur" (quarantined messages count) reported by sendmail 8.13+. Existing RRD files will continue to work, but will not track this data item. * A new reporting option lets you save the availability data in a comma-separated file, for import to spreadsheets. * Updates of RRD files now use the RRDtool "template" facility to map data-values to the correct RRD datasets. This should solve the problem with migrating of vmstat data from several systems, including AIX. * A couple of log files have moved to /var/log/hobbit: The nkstatus.log file (from the "server/" directory); and the acklog and notifications.log files (from the data/acks directory). * Hobbit now works when compiled with RRDtool 1.2.x. * /lib64 is searched for libraries by the configure script. * You can now define environment "areas", i.e. an environment variable defined in hobbitserver.cfg can have different values. This lets you eg. setup the BBDISP variable with different values for the maintenance tools, so you can send "disable" messages also to your standby Hobbit server. * You can limit utilisation tracking of filesystems via the new RRDDISKS and NORRDDISKS environment settings. * A new "contrib" directory was added to the distribution. It currently includes a couple of Hobbit logo GIF's, and a HOWTO document describing how to setup a clustered Hobbit installation. Henrik

purple recovery

Please help clear up a few things for me. I setup Hobbit Monitor only to find out that Hobbit coulnd't get a netowrk response from a couple of systems. The networking issues have been resolved in that the server itself can get a ping/fping connectivity response from an interface that it's monitoring but Hobbit still reports that the interface is unreachable and thus remains purple. System unreachable for 553 poll periods (173239 seconds) yet /usr/sbin/fping 192.168.200.145 192.168.200.145 is alive Speaking of connectivity, have I misunderstood the difference between "noping" and "noconn"? It seems that if I set "noconn", I still get pages yet "noping" produces the empty white circles and no more alerts.

support for Windows systems

Since Hobbit can use the BB client, can it be used to actually monitor Windows clients (NT,W2K, XP)? I ask because the man page for BB-Host for BB lists a "svcs" service but I haven't seen any mention of one for Hobbit. Part of our migration from BB to Hobbit requires monitoring a syslog application on our Windows platforms.
