Hello, I have Xymon 4.3.7 installed in '/home/xymon'. I notice that at the top level there is a directory called 'data' (along with 'acks', 'disabled', 'hist', 'histlogs' etc). Can someone tell me what the 'data' directory is used for please? It is empty. On our BB system there is a 'bbvar/data' directory which contains text files of the current status of various tests for hosts. Is there any sort of similar arrangement with Xymon (that is, any ability to store the current reported status in a text file)? Having problems with custom perl script for emails in alerts.cfg

Hi folks. I have been working this week on trying to customize email alerts coming from xymon to our support team. I downloaded the html_Mail.pl script from the scripts pages. I have been trying to get it to work via alerts.cfg but it's not. When I activiated it, I also noticed that other email alerts I had stopped coming. Here is a snip from alerts.cfg where I defined it: #Macro definitions for email $SRMCUSTOM=SCRIPT /home/xymon/server/ext/html_mail.pl me at schawk.com FORMAT=PLAIN If there are errors in the perl code, would this cause all of the other email alerts not to work too or only this piece? Hello out there, having implemented Xymon 4.3.7 and working with it, I'm wondering about a "cosmetic" thing. We have several Xymon environments for several customer datacenter's. One environment has 40 pages on the main view, but they should be separated between PROD and TEST environments. At this time, they are separated by the name of the pages, for example "Application" and "Application-T" (for TEST), or "Database" and "Database-T" and so on. In the upper half of the main view, there are the PROD pages, and in the lower half of the main view, there are the TEST pages. The two halves are separated by "dummy" pages. For example: [Application] [-] [Application-T] The [-] is on of the dummy pages, the next dummy page is [--], then the next dummy page is [---] and so on. For me this is not really nice, I would rather like to have the ability to separate things using HTML-tags, for example <HR>, but I don't know if this is possible on the main view? rpm for VMWare vMA appliance

Does anyone know what happened to the yum repo on staff.telkomsa.net? I'm setting up a little VMWare appliance to monitor the VMWare servers. It's a minimalist CentOS 5.3 distro. Then I'm installing the VMWare-monitor software, which says to put a xymon client on the machine, and suggests Telkomsa's rpm for that purpose. Unfortunately, that went away a couple of months back. I haven't figured out, or have time to build my own rpm. The teribithia 4.3.7 version wants lsb, and who knows what else. I guess I'll start down that road. Thought Process for Xymon Page Layout - Sanity Check

Hi folks. I have been modifying our xymon server host cfg file setups. I have been moving page layouts around. I thought I would send a note to the list to see what others are doing in their web page layouts just to have a sanity check… Do you set up your main page to list things by OS, then by environment – like this: Unix - then Prod, Dev, Test, Uat, etc. Windows – then Prod, Dev, Test, Uat, etc. Do you also use Application groups and then arrange them by OS and environment ? App1, Unix, Prod App1, Unix, Dev Or App1, Prod App1, Dev Here's what I've been doing and I'm having second thoughts about the logic of doing it this way: Main xymon page lists the following Pages Server lists by hostname Applications Infrastructure Other Systems Under Server lists by hostname – I have now made up UNIX-MAC and WINDOWS Under each of these I have PROD and DEV Under the Applications I have several business Applications - App1 App2 App3 In each of the App1, App2, App3, I have Prod and Dev subpages I'm creating include files for each category – like HostsApp1Prod.cfg, HostsApp1Dev.cfg, HostsApp2Prod.cfg, HostsApp2Dev.cfg, etc. Now that I've changed it, I will probably need to create new HostsApp1ProdUnixMac.cfg, HostsApp1ProdWindows.cfg I would like to be able to setup base rules for monitoring the Prod & Dev systems – Prod disk, mem, cpu is different than Dev disk, mem, cpu, etc. That's why I thought breaking out by OS and then environment would make sense. Then I want to create very specific service, process, or other monitoring for the application servers. Does this seem like a good way to go, or am I making it too complicated by breaking everything down this way? Thanks Don K

Upgrade steps

I use the following approach: 1. Install each version of Xymon to separate directory, for example: /u01/app/xymon/product/xymon.4.3.4 /u01/app/xymon/product/xymon.4.3.7 2. Make symb link /u01/app/xymon/product/xymon -> /u01/app/xymon/product/xymon.4.3.4 and use /u01/app/xymon/product/xymon - path where needed (web-server config, custom scripts, etc) 3. After new version is installed - just compare (if need) changes in config files (ne woptions, settings, etc), copy your config, copy or move rrd, etc. to new path, update ports (if non-stanmdard used), etc. Then just stop old one, start new one. This will also minimize downtime.
