Dear All, Some time ago we've started using xymon to monitor our network and it works fine. Now we would like to use the statistics of xymon for weekly reports, therefor we would like to connect xynmon to amysql database backend for graphing. urrently we use rrd for trends an graphs. FOLLOWUP: Script to rotate on-call tech hourly and weekly

A long ways back, I posted asking about how to rotate paging when there was a complex paging schedule, with multiple people working overlapping shifts. In addition to our hourly on-duty schedule we have weekly rotations for various teams on-call. We wanted to be able to tell xymon to page the DBA on-call or the tech ons duty this hour, without having to write what were becoming increasingly cumbersome rules. Well, we couldn't find anything that would do what we wanted, so we ended up writing something in-house. (I say "we" but I mean one of our developers, who gave up some "innovation Friday" time and some personal evening/weekend time as well!) It's still in the quick-and-dirty stage, not well-documented or polished enough to release as an open source tool yet, but we'd like to get it there. Meanwhile I wanted to share it. You're welcome to look at it and to use it in whole or in part, but please do not formally redistribute it until we can get it into better shape. We just started production acceptance testing of xymon and this script, this week. The program takes as input an XML file containing definitions for people (name, email, and pager) , one or more lines for each tech in the weekly schedule, and a line for each of the weekly rotations. It outputs a list of the pager addresses for each person on duty, suitable for using as a mail alias file, or a list of names, OR a weekly schedule in csv format for ease of reading in a spreadsheet to check your work.

Limiting Access

Hello, We have been using BB for several years and are ready to upgrade everything to a new monitoring system. We would really like to use Xymon. We have several different groups that will need to use the system in different ways. We were curious what solutions people may have come up with to limit access to certain tests or hosts. For instance, we have a group that will simply monitor certain hosts and make judgments on who to call based on status, these systems would be a subset of all the systems . They have no real technical knowledge and do not need to see all the systems. We may have a group of admins that need to see a certain set of hosts, but not every host since they have no real technical responsibility for certain systems. Also, we have a lot of custom scripts that monitor security related items (locked accounts, brute force attempts etc), we would want only a certain group (security group) to be able to access those tests. Not being very familiar with Xymon yet, we were wondering if there was a way to accomplish this. If not natively in Xymon, maybe via Apache? Any suggestions on how to proceed?

!@#$% I've never been good a dealing with the aftermath of purple alerts, and always end-up using brute-force to remove all hostname references in $XYMON/data. But this time I really screwed-up and ran bb 127.0.0.1 "drop HOSTNAME TEST" for the purple-affected hosts... and now I can't get 'em back! I need help/suggestions/advice TIA! -- JONATHAN B. Suggestion: make config or make init targets

Hi, It would be nice if there was a way to install particularly the init script automatically. For example, on Redhat, one has to (copied and pasted from another page - I did something similar for the version I got from subversion, where I was just compiling and installing the client): # cp -p /usr/local/src/xymon-4.2.3/rpm/hobbit-init.d /etc/rc.d/init.d/xymon # chown root:root /etc/rc.d/init.d/xymon # chmod 755 /etc/rc.d/init.d/xymon # chkconfig xymon on One has to also edit /etc/rc.d/init.d/xymon change the DAEMON to point to one's actual path (which the configure script already has). The above steps need to be done for xymon-client too. Then you need to copy /path/to/source/xymon-client.default to /etc/default/xymon-client. You need to edit it and add the Xymon server IP address, which again, you already entered in the configure script... There are several steps here which could be automated, and it would make installing the client on machines quicker and less error prone, and many of us have to do this on many machines. I suggest the above could be accomplished with a "make config" or "make init" target from the source directory, logged in as root. If you are using e.g. Debian instead of Redhat, this would be automatically detected and the debian init scripts would be installed instead. Unfortunately, I'm no shell script wizz and can't really do this myself. Kind regards, Sebastian A

The LEDs for cpu, disk, files, memory, msgs, ports, and procs on the three affected hosts remain missing. On each of the affected clients, $XYMON/tmp/{hobbit_vmstat.biotech.nnn,msg.biotech.txt) exist and are updated regularly (@5-minute intervals). So, what's wrong on the server? BBWin False positive - data on two lines
