COMMENT & DESCR not working properly on lastest trunk ?

Hello Henrik, I've started to play with trunk yesterday. Comparing with 4.2, i noticed that : -COMMENT are not showed on main pages, but are on bb2.html (i've tried with --tooltips=always and withtout --tooltips) -DESCR are showed on bb2.html when there is no COMMENT for the host i dont think bbgen's manual is up2date in trunk.. -> is there a way to always show COMMENT and never show DESCR ? (no problem if not; an explication on COMMENT and DESCR new behaviour will be good enough) Regards, Olivier Beau

Not really a bug, but when the log directory does not exist, the hobbit server will start without any error. A fix is easy, just create the direcory when it does not exist: In hobbitd/hobbit.sh.DIST, add the mkdir line. hobbit -> xymon migration

Hi, I have more then 20 hobbit servers and a few 100 hobbit AIX/Linux clients to migrate from hobbit to xymon. I'm not going to do this by hand as you can imagine. Anyone interested in documenting the migration process and developing a migration script ? Stef

timed alerts

They want something that if a yellow alert is displayed for more than a configurable time that Hobbit/XYmon sets the state of this alert to red. E.g. if the msgs test is continuously yellow for 1 day or week the server automatically sets the state to red after this time. In the company where I operate the monitoring solution we have plenty of yellow alerts which get more or less ignored. So if an alert is not resolved within a certain time it should go red and tease the admins until they solve the problem. If it is not possible with Hobbit 4.2.0 maybe it could be integrated in one of the next releases? Second question: I have Hobbit server set up with centralised configuration. But some of the clients are running with local configuration. What do I have to do to monitor the log files like /var/log/messages on this client or check for the existence of certain files. At the moment I have the entries "LOG /var/log/messages error" and "FILE /somedir/core NOEXIST" in localclient.cfg on the client and also on the server in hobbit-clients.cfg. But nothing is monitored. Any help would be appreciated. Hobbit Development Platform

Hi Henrik What platform (OS and hardware) do you use to develop Hobbit? Long question about BB clients and HOBBIT clients

Good day. I'm a long-time BB user. About 18 months ago I switched my BB server to Hobbit/Xymon. Everything has worked shwell.... until recently, of course. Hence this email. There was a thread recently about screen-scraping the SERVICE=info webpage to get the OS off of it. That seemed pretty useful/cool to me so I tried it. However, my SERVICE=info webpage doesn't have the OS on it. More nosing around led me to the hobbitdboard command although it did take me quite awhile to figure out how to use hobbitdboard. I was somewhat dismayed to finally figure out how to use hobbitdboard just to discover that when I did this command: % .../bb 127.0.0.1 "hobbitdboard test=info fields=hostname,BBH_OS" that there was no BBH_OS field available. (Or maybe it was available but empty...?) Anyhoo, I somehow figured out (I no longer remember HOW I figured this out) that I could modify one of my BB client scripts to do this: $BB $BBDISP "client `$UNAME -n`.`$UNAME`" which pretty much seems to work. I can now do the aforementioned hobbitdboard command and get the OS returned. Cool stuff. *HOWEVER*, I noticed 2 side effects of this. The first side effect being that the SERVICE=info webpage doesn't seem to have ANYTHING on it now. I not only don't get the OS, the page is blank (or maybe there's some error somewhere in the pipeline now?). You might not think that this is connected to my change, but I haven't added the $BB $BBDISP "client `$UNAME -n`.`$UNAME`" command to all of my clients. And only the ones that have that addition also now have the blank/borken SERVICE=info webpage. The second side effect is much more impressive and the real reason for my email today. Since implementing my addition to most of my BB clients, I now get 2 MSGS reports from each of those clients every update period. So every 5 minutes I get 2 MSGS reports. One is green and says something like this: Wed Dec 10 11:27:32 EST 2008 No bad messages Status unchanged in 0.00 minutes Status message received from YOUR_UP_HERE_PAL The other report is clear and looks something like this: System logs at : No log data available The client did not report any logfile data Of course, since I'm getting two different colors every polling period, that means that I'm getting two different log files and that each of them is stored. And since I have this on 130 machines, I'm getting 260 files every five minutes. A week ago this filled up my disk. And this past week the system ran out of inodes. The entertainment never stops! :-) I'm pretty sure that the green message is from my BB client. (My MSGS were all green before I put my addition in place.) I don't really know where the clear message is coming from. I'm guessing that it's coming from hobbit but I have no idea how I started this "feature". If it is coming from hobbit: How does it run? Why does it run? Should I be using this instead of the BB client? Where do I go to track down some of this stuff? I'd appreciate any guidance both on my problem and any location of where I could go to learn more about this. Novell SuSE SLES 10 client issue.

Okay, I have a few Novell SuSE SLES 10 servers. I compiled the 4.2 client on one of them and tried to get it to talk to the Master running on Solaris 9. The page shows the Master tests, ping, ssh (and they work! - got paged tonight when the interface on one went AWOL) On the client side. In client/tmp = the files are created and ready to send The client has a couple probes, and they have good output too. I can telnet to the master from the clients on port 1984 successfully. The client refuses to publish out to the Master. My bb-hosts has the proper entries for IP and names (tested that empirically ) and I have a number of graphs spec'd after trends:* My sun connections all work fine (Solaris 9 mainly, no 10) I am wondering if something needs to be changed in the compile to make the client work on SLES 10. I am NOT a programmer, so need some help here... lurch at inorbit.com
