External scripts - template or how-to ?

It's me again :) Just installed my first hobbit server - and now I can't wait to stuff more and more tests into the box. Hobbit does come with a lot of predefined tests, but I've come to the point where I'd like to create my own external test. Is there a skeleton or template for ext scripts somewhere ? Or perhaps a nice HOW-TO ? Poking around on the web gives me some ideas ( how to launch, use bbhostgrep, ect. ) - but I'm sure some of you guys have allready done this. For instance, how do you determine if tests should be done on the ip-addresse or the host name ? Thanks for your time ... /Torben

ldap test without binary output

Hi List Is it possible to do a ldap test and NOT display the (binary) output from the ldap query ? I'm monitoring a Certificate Revokation List, which is in binary format. Hobbit displays the output on the web page, and it sure is ugly :) Thanks /Torben

Hobbit client data parsing

I use Hobbit client and server, but the data was not parsed propperly. This happend 2 times now. The disk check gives this error: - Filesystems NOT ok red Expected string (Capacity and Mounted) not found in df output header And after that the disk graphs are split up because there are 2 extra diskslices added: "/status" "//dev/ad0s1b" According to the graph the counters for these slices are "nan" instead of 0.0 or any other number. Does anybody have familiar problems? Henrik, is there a smart way to make a copy of the clientdata file if there are any alerts (red or yellow)?

I've actually downloaded a program called SMSSend which does web based SMS messages to any provider/number you can download off the website. Then I created a small shell script that will execute off the SCRIPT command in the hobbit-alerts.cfg file, formatting the output in anyway I need. Instead of buying the companies paging client/server software we wrote our own. I'm currently waiting for an enhancement to it so I can send longer pages. Currently, I'm using Email paging, which our pager provider allows. Either way, I parse the output of the entire status page with some really simple shell scripts to deliver more descriptive pages. I end up with a generic page that just says "servername.net cpu problem. ACK Code: xxxx" for tests where a generic page is appropriate. For other tests (disk for instance) I usually just look for the lines that start with "&red" and scrape the text out of it. In some of our home written tests, I've started adding lines like <hobbitpage This is the text to send >. That way the browsers won't display it, but it's easy to scrape the text out with a simple script. It would be nice if there were some kind of convention for that. I've started doing the same things for graphing <hobbitgraph 10 20 30>. It makes the external scripts to populate the rrd files dirt simple. Of course, that's no help at all for paging via modem :) I had setup hylafax ( http://www.hylafax.org/ ) in the past. And it works, but was a pain to get to work with my provider at the time. I had to get through to the right technical resource at the paging company. External Paging

Hello, I am currently running Hobbit 4.2.1 on Fedora Core 4\Compaq DL380. Everything is working great with Hobbit and I'm onto the next step of setting up paging using a modem to dial out to our blackberries\cell phones. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how I can get this started or on how anyone has their paging environment setup. Thanks much, bill

hobbitgraph.cfg definition for graphing total # httpd servers

A problem came up which required us to monitor the total number of apache servers running on our webservers, and I solved it by adding adding a CDEF to apache1 hobbitgraph.cfg definition. The attached patch uses sum of the idle & busy workers data values to create a third value, total workers, for hobbit to graph. It also allowed me to use data I was already collecting with my apache tests instead of creating a new test or addon script, which is always good in my mind. Since it did the trick and we were able to monitor httpd more closely, I thought I'd throw the patch out to the list for others to use, if they needed something like this. If so, I hope it helps you. Hi Everyone, First I just want to say, I have made the switch from BigBrother to Hobbit and, I must say, I'm really loving the flexibility Hobbit brings to the table. Anyways, my first question (of many I'm sure) is that for some reason, I don't get to see the service code that generated the yellow alert.
