Problem with disable/enable and non-standard TTL

I have a nightly backup process that starts at 19:00 and runs about 3 hours. I need to know if it failed to start on time, ran too long, or just plain failed. I currently invoke a BB script at the start of the backup to set a value of 'clear' with a 3 hour 15 minute TTL. When the backup finishes I run another BB script that sets the proper color (green, yellow, or red) with an expiration time that calculates to 19:05 the next night. And I alert on red or purple. The problem I run into with enable/disable is that setting ALL to disabled and then re-enabling later looses the custom expiration time -- and 30 minutes after enabling the test, we start paging because the backup hasn't run/finished. Hi all, As I understand, the page and subpage options help you to organize your bunch of hosts. I have split them up in SLA's so I can alert on each SLA we have. This is a very nice feature. Now I thought it would be nice to have another view on my bunch of hosts from a system perspective. So I have set up my bb-hosts file as follows and get the : ---------- page SLA SLA subpage Application1 Application1 include bb-hosts-solaris-application1.txt include bb-hosts-linux-application1.txt subpage Application2 Application2 include bb-hosts-solaris-application2.txt include bb-hosts-linux-application2.txt page System System subpage Solaris Solaris include bb-hosts-solaris-application1.txt include bb-hosts-solaris-application2.txt subpage Linux Linux include bb-hosts-linux-application1.txt include bb-hosts-linux-application2.txt ----------- In the top-display I see: SLA and System and I can walk through either branch to see my hosts, but in the bbnet column it says (in yellow): Host XXXX appears twice in bb-hosts! This may cause strange results Host YYYY appears twice in bb-hosts! This may cause strange results So I guess the bbnet process double pings the associated hosts, so it generates a double load. That's unwanted, but I like the approach very much (an application/SLA-view and a system manager's-view). Is there another (better & cleaner) way of setting this up? Peter

Unexpected service response

I've never had a problem with the SMTP test before. Now, testing a postfix mail server, I get a Yellow alert, and the page says: Service smtp on mail.domain.com is not OK : Unexpected service response 501 Syntax error in parameters or arguments I can telnet to port 25 on this server with no problems from the hobbit server, I get a 220 message upon connect. Here is exactly what I get (names and IPs changed to protect the innocent). So what can be the problem here? [root at hobbit etc]# telnet mail.domain.com 25 Trying 20.30.40.51... Connected to adsl-20-30-40-51.dsl.hometown.isp.net (20.30.40.51). Escape character is '^]'. 220 SMTP service ready Thanks, Michael

Thanks for the tip, Henrik. The problem was that my hobbit server does not have any valid DNS entries. Once I masqueraded the envelope and relayed through a server with a good PTR record, it worked great! Thanks again. I'm having problems getting mail messages to my phone. I can send them manually, but was under the impression that I should use the "FORMAT=SMS" option to send to my phone since it has <160 characters allowed. When sending, I get the "DSN: Data format error" from the mail server at my cell company. Do I have to have a script written for this to work, or should it work as I have it configured? Here is the only entry in hobbit that I have configured that has anything to do with this message being sent. Any help would be appreciated! Hello Actually we use bb with bbgen 3.5 on Production and plan to upgrade to hobbit. I have already installed hobbit on a testserver (4.0.4, RHEL 3.0). Now i try to configure hobbit like our production bb and have 2 problems with the pagesets and alert-configuration.
