Hi all, I was trying to write scripts for tesing specific programs running. But I dont understand what is the format that the data must me sent to the Server manually. I tried off with "$bin/bb --debug HOSTIP MSG" command it says that the msg is send but its not reflected in the hobbit monitoring page of the server. Some other doubts related to Hobbit are : 1. What is the proper execution plan of hobbit monitoring the clients. 2. Is it that the client contact the server to give the data / is the client collects the data after certain intervals and and when the Hobbit server on refreshing contacts the client and retreives the data ?? (in short----How does a Hobbit client POST the data to the Hobbit server ???) 3. What is the proper format in which Hobbit server recieves/updates the status or data send by Client?? Nowhere I have seen a way that server uses for receiving the info from the client. 4.What are hobbit-agents? Please reply ASAP. Thanks Rakz

Problem configuring HobbitFetch

I have my Hobbit server behind a firewall. The Hobbit server appears to be running fine. I'm getting cpu, disk, files, etc data from client systems on the same network segment. With systems outside the firewall, I am only getting the conn, info, and trends - nothing else. I'm using hobbit-4.2.0.tar.gz source on RHEL4 WS boxes, both server and clients. On my outside client, /usr/local/hobbit/client/tmp has; hobbit_vmstat.ggw-s-log.ggw.noaa.gov.10947 msg.ggw-s-log.ggw.noaa.gov.txt The file creation dates are current, and being updated. In /usr/local/hobbit/client/etc/clientlaunch.cfg I've changed [msgcache] DISABLED to ENABLED In .../hobbitclient.cfg, BBDISP="127.0.0.1" selinux is set to permissive. The hobbit client has been restarted. The msgcache.log shows a normal start and listening on 0.0.0.0:1984 The clientlaunch.log does not show any errors. The hobbitclient.log does not show any errors. (existing entries are old errors.) Hobbit is configured to use uid = "bb". User bb can ssh without a password from the internal server to the external client. Tested on IP, and all variations of the full URL, and configured alias URLs. In /usr/local/hobbit/server/etc/bb-hosts, the external client has "pulldata" listed after the # The hobbit server has been restarted. I must be missing something, but I'm not having much luck figuring out what it is. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Gar

nagios vs hobbit

In my opinion, no competition at all! I've just taken on a new job where they use Nagios for monitoring. I've never used nagios before so it's a pretty steep learning curve. The setup is basic and it's may job to flesh it out and provide some detail - graphs, reports etc. Every time I have to add a new monitor or get asked to graph something, I keep thinking 'This would be so much easier with hobbit!'

I/O Statistics per Filesystem

Hi All, Is there a scripts in hobbit that monitors disk I/O performance in linux box per filesystem and with graphical presentation ? What I have now is I/O performance but per block or system wide. Create Customized schedule for alerts

Hi, I have set of servers that I want the alerts go as followed I need the first alert to go after 5 minutes , then every 30 minutes for two hours , then every four hours till it recovers. I tried some thing like DURATION>5 REPEAT=30m,60m,90m,120m,4h RECOVERED but it didn`t work.. Any ideas .. Thanks Tom

I struggled with the same thing through a lot of trial and error. On a related note, I highly recommend trying to get away from using a comma separated list as it's a nightmare to maintain. I'm working toward using the PAGE token, where a list of hosts on a given page alerts a group, so you're effectively grouping your hosts based on the support team responsible. There will still be exceptions, but if you can generalize alerts so all the hosts on a given page can alert the same way, you'll save time and avoid the possibility of a host not having an alert configured.
