Getting bbwin central config mode on Debian Etch

Background information: We have an install of Big Brother BTF, an install I inherited when I took the job a few years ago. Recently I discovered the unfortunate fact that we're not covered by the BTF license, so we are exploring other options. Hobbit seems to be our best option. I am using another server to build up a Hobbit configuration. I installed it from the source tarball because I couldn't get the bbwin central config patch to apply against the debian source package. I started looking into the Hobbit 4.3 snapshots, but I haven't been able to get them to build using 'debian/rules binary'. Just a few minutes ago I got an idea. I unpacked the pristine 4.2.0 source, applied the allinone patch, applied the bbwin patch, and then ran 'debian/rules binary'. This successfully built packages. First question - will these packages built from patched 4.2.0 work properly? Second question - anything I can do to get the Hobbit 4.3 snapshot (2008/06/05) to build? I like what I see with Hobbit. Unfortunately I have moved from a Windows /Linux network environment to Windows environment where I need a windows network monitor. Are there any plans to monitor windows systems? Keep up the good work. Have a great weekend and stay cool. v/r Mark M

Hobbit alerts on process START

On a primary/secondary server, service failover, Hobbit will alert that a service has failed on primary server <good>; Can it alert that the service has STARTED on the secondary server? Failed to get a message, terminating

RUNNING: Linux host.math.purdue.edu 2.6.9-67.0.1.ELsmp #1 SMP Fri Nov 30 11:57:43 EST 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux Hobbit V4.2.0 with patches. In the hobbitclient.log file I am getting the following: 2008-04-01 13:49:26 Failed to get a message, terminating 2008-04-01 13:54:27 Failed to get a message, terminating 2008-04-01 13:59:28 Failed to get a message, terminating 2008-04-01 14:04:28 Failed to get a message, terminating I am trying to figure out what is causing this message. My display server has the entry for host in the list and seems to be giving the correct information. This is the first time I have installed hobbit on a linux machine so I could be missing something. DOWNTIME ALERTS

Hello, First thank you for the fantastic tool which I have been using for quite some time now. I tried using DOWNTIME in bb-hosts instead of using TIME in hobbit-alerts to ignore alerting on some nightly reboots and inform operators via the info page what is going on. DOWNTIME really appears to be a better approach, if I could make it work . Though I've read some of the posts and documentation I think my configuration (below) is perhaps wrong as alerts are sent during the downtime window. Do I need to specify a service, or am I simply misunderstanding the concept? NCV and SPLITNCV

I have multiple datasets that I am currently using NCV to create a graph for. But the problem that I am running into is that I would like to have say 2 of the datasets go to test.success.rrd and the other 3 datasets goto test.stream.rrd. I can't seem to be able to do this with NCV but searching on the net I found that someone created a patch that included an option for SPLITNCV_column-name. But looking in my version of hobbit in hobbitd/rrd/do_ncv.c file it doesn't have the parameters for the SPLITNCV option. Is there a different way that got incorporated into hobbit or can someone show me how to use SPLITNCV. --Josh

Hi Werner, I've just changed the alert configuration file, but your suggestion didn't work. The problem still remains. The configuration file I mentioned in my last email worked well on version 4.1.2p1, but it doesn't work on last version. I don't know what happens!!! Thanks in advance.
