Hello, I have Xymon 4.3.0-0.beta2 installed under solaris (server and client). I am trying to configure a new test with 10 minutes of interval (10m). I try several INTERVALS in clientlaunch.cfg but doesnt work ( I try 5m, 7m, 10m, etc). All tests do not respect INTERVAL sentence. Here my configuration: [cont] ENVFILE $HOBBITCLIENTHOME/etc/hobbitclient.cfg CMD $HOBBITCLIENTHOME/ext/bb-contenedor.sh LOGFILE $HOBBITCLIENTHOME/logs/bb-contenedor.log INTERVAL 10m Any Idea? hobbit alerts as ATT0000*.BIN (or .DAT) attachments with no body

Hello, So we have a custom alert setup to check for (temperature) changes within another file. It seems hobbit is sending out the alert only as a .bin (or .dat) attachment. from the archives, another user is having this problem; http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2007/03/msg00245.html it seems this is a 'carriage return' problem. this is happening for just a few alerts. is there another way of getting this fixed besides what the above link explains? I have had no luck doing this. I am also noticing this for other standard alerts also. Is there anything in the hobbit code or configuration that can be done about this? thanks Tom.

Disk test, NFS and FTP queries

Hello List, I'm rather familiar with BigBrother but new to Xymon. My Xymon server 4.2.3 runs on CentOS and my monitored nodes are a mix of Solaris, Windows, Cisco, and NetApp hosts. Q1. Is there a way to avoid the Solaris 10 virtual filesystems (i.e./etc/dfs/sharetab) from being listed/graphed in the disk test? (possibly via conf setting on the Xymon client, rather than on the server) Also, the web page shows seven filesystems, whereas the RRD graphs show nine of them... (those 7 plus /devices and /var/run). How do I get rid of them? Q2. I manage to monitor NFS mounted filesystems (from a NetApp filer) via an external script from deadcat.net, but is there a way to get them show up in the disk test/column? This way I get to: a. save a column ;-) b. have all the filesystems shown under one roof c. have NFS filesystems automagically graphed Q3. Is there a functionality similar to the BB www/notes html files, and a template that matches the current xymon fonts/style? Or, where can I add custom info about my monitored nodes? I.e. serial numbers, helpdesk contacts, etc... Q4. I have had to enable ftp on one Solaris 10 box to allow it to just ftp itself (don't ask!), and therefore I configured /etc/hosts.allow as follows: [actarus]$ grep ftp /etc/hosts.allow in.ftpd: actarus [actarus]$ Now, on the bb-hosts on the Xymon server, if I put: 10.11.12.13 actarus # http://actarus/ ssh !telnet !ftp !smtp it gets RED, telling me that FTP is up and if I put 10.11.12.13 actarus # http://actarus/ ssh !telnet ftp !smtp# it gets YELLOW with the following message: Service ftp on actarus is not OK : Unexpected service response In fact, if I ftp actarus from the Xymon server cli, I get: $ ftp actarus Connected to actarus.boing.com. 421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection ftp> quit $ Is there a way around this? Xymon limits ack-comment on bb2 to 30 chars?

Hi, I've noticed that our acknowledgement comments gets truncated to 30 chars on the bb2.html acknowledge-page - how do I change this behaviour? Regards, Carl.

Custom Graphing Troubleshooting

OK, here it is again, for your reading pleasure. :-) Cut and pasted from my sent items - you may have to read the original thread to appreciate the context, but the process is sound for any graph The original thread is here http://www.hswn.dk/hobbiton/2010/06/msg00068.html --- snip --- Hi When in doubt, take it from the top. 1. Make sure data is coming through. (You have an icon, so it probably is) 2. Check that USERS:227 really is on its own line in the html display. (Use view source in your browser) Anything else on that line will cause problems, and your data will not go into the rrd file. 3. Check that an appropriate rrd file is being created. 4. Check that there is data in the rrd file. rrdtool dump <rrdfile.rrd> | grep name (Should see "<name> USERS </name>") 5. Check there is data too. rrdtool dump <rrdfile.rrd> | grep "/row>" | grep -v "NaN" (You should see values between <v> and </v> If all of the above are good, then you are getting data, and storing it. This means your issue is in the graphing. (See below) If they are failing, check as follows 1a. Make sure your test is running correctly and sending data properly. (troubleshooting guides available in many places) 2a. Modify your data output to ensure the data:value is really on its own line. NOTHING may share the line. Even if it looks alone in the display, it may have HTML formatting stuff before or after. This will cause it to break. 3a. Make sure the appropriate entries exist in hobbitserver.cfg. (looks OK in your case) If in doubt use NCV_testname="*:GAUGE" It's a hack, but valid, and adds anything it thinks is a value to the rrd file. Once you know what the entry looks like in the rrdfile (see step 4 above) you can refine the NCV entry, delete the rrdfile and let it start over. Remember, a restart is required after making changes to hobbitserver.cfg 4a. Make sure the rrd helper apps are running on your server. Check ~/server/etc/hobbitlaunch.cfg to make sure nothing related to rrd is disabled. If in doubt, do a restart. Log files may also help here. 5a. Check the log files. Normally /var/log/xymon/rrd*.log Lots of grep required to make it look sane. As mentioned, if all of the above is good, then we probably have a graphing problem. Looking at your graph definition, we need to check the following. 6. [graphname] must match the test name as seen on the main page and must be unique. (You are getting empty graphs, so this is probably correct) 7. TITLE and YAXIS is free-form text, they can be anything, but no special characters please. 8. DEF is a vital line, and you need to get it right. DEF:AnyName=rrdfile.rrd: column_name:AVERAGE This is defining an internal "variable" called AnyName to be the value of the column_name in rrdfile.rrd column_name must match the name you get from doing rrdtool dump rrdfile.rrd (Step 4 above) Getting this bit wrong is common. 9. AREA defines the graph type, data and colour. AREA:AnyName#00CC00:Description AREA could be LINE1, LINE2, it merely defines your graph type. (As long as it's valid, it should be good) AnyName has to correspond to the "variable" you defined in the DEF line. (See 8 above) Get it wrong, no graph. #00CC00 is an HTML colour definition See here for a partial list of valid values. http://html-color-codes.com/ Description is what will appear next to the colour legend just below the graph. (It's also free-form, but no special characters) 10. COMMENT is also free-form, but no special characters. (Comment it out for troubleshooting) 11. The GPRINT lines are simply defining your min, max, cur and average values below the graph. For troubleshooting, you can comment them out. (Process of elimination) Be patient. Because you are using averages, it needs data to average. So it needs at least 2 values. If you have bad timing, it could take as long as 10 minutes to collect 2 values. --- snip ---

SSL cert testing to match common name with host/URL?

I've been adding testing of https URLs into our system and noticed that while the expiration date checking is nice, Xymon doesn't seem to be checking testing the common name at all for validity (in the manner that a browser might). I've been examining contest.c and bbtest-net.c/h looking for the best way of exposing this data back up to the status determination near line ~1800 of bbtest-net.c, but can't seem to properly add things to the testitem struct to get things passed properly. E.g.: contest.c:649: item->certcommonname = strdup(X509_NAME_get_text_by_NID(X509_get_subject_name(peercert), NID_commonName, NULL, 0)); Has anyone tried to solve this problem before? temperature test and graphing

I've since found that Xymon will automatically graph my temperature tests if I use the name "temperature" instead of temp. But, I still have no desire to do that. Would changing it to "temp" require me to edit the source code and recompile, or is this in config files? I can't find anything on the web that necessarily addresses this. Limit on bbproxy display servers

Hi, i'd like to check before I go ahead and attempt this, as it is in a production environment and I do not have the resources to set this up fully in pre-prod. We currently have a bbproxy app which sends it's details to 3 bbdisplays. For example, we run bbproxy using the following command: /export/home/hobbit/server/bin/bbproxy --bbdisplay="10.7.60.1:1985, 10.8.60.1:1985,127.0.0.1:1985" --report=bbproxy --logfile="logs/bbproxy.log" Now, I have read in the documentation that 3 bbdisplays is the limit. However, we want to add in a fourth. Is the 3 bbdisplays a recommended limit, or a hardcoded limit? If so, why? Would I be able to put in a 4th bbdisplay without anything breaking? Thanks!
