does anyone have/know of Xymon plugins/extensions for IBM IMMs? -- Even the Magic 8 ball has an opinion on email clients: Outlook not so good.

Conn Alert after one missed packet

Hello list, Is it possible to be alerted when one single packet is lost i.e. conn request does not receive a reply for the first packet? I know the default fping sends out 3 packets when if the conn request does not receive a reply after a set period. Looking at the fping man page, I've changed the fping syntax to "fping -A -e -r1", but this will still send one additional ping packet before an alert is raised. Alternatively I could look at creating a custom script, but obviously it's easier if this facility is already built-in somehow. Thanks, Mario

For those of you who wanted it, here is the F5 monitoring script I wrote. I'm sure there is room for improvement as I'm not the world's best scripter, but it works well and has been 100% maintenance free for me since I put it in production. Basic instructions are in the top of the file. Make sure you satisfy all the dependencies and set all the environment variables before you run it the first time or it will fail badly. This was written for F5 software version 10.2; I don't have access to other versions so I'm not sure what if any other versions will work. There's a good chance that other versions should work though, they don't generally modify the MIB very much from version to version, and I don't rely too heavily on the MIB anyway except to translate the OIDS into something easier to read. As long as the top level of each part of the MIB stays the same (where I start doing snmpwalks) the rest should be OK. Feedback on how it's working for you, F5 software version, improvements, etc. would be appreciated. Waiting on permissions for the Xymonton page so I can post it. Xymon 4.3.5 restart for adding host

Hi, On every change I do in hosts.cfg, I need to restart xymon service. This cause me lot of work, cause all my test (blue) came back in red... and send alerts. Someone have same as me ? David Raymond

How long are you waiting after making changes to hosts.cfg? It may take a couple of minutes, especially if you are adding new hosts. Hi guys I have a client that dislikes open source software. They feel it's "out of control", there's no support, and no backup. They prefer something where they can get "professional" support, and licensed software and all the crap we have all heard before. Somebody at the top, decided that SolarWinds is the corporate standard. >From what I have read, it's SNMP based, so great for network, and stuff running SNMP, but not so good for anything else. Has anybody had any hands-on experience with both Solarwinds and Xymon, who can give me a short breakdown of the advantages and disadvantages of Solarwinds compared to Xymon? Regards Vernon

Hi, I'm searching an easier way to configure my xymon 4.3.5 server other than specifying @IP at each test necessary in hosts.cfg. My configuration is with two IPs. I'm on Debian squeeze. One for the real physical IP and another with an alias (which i try to use with my xymon server). Even if i set a DNS name, a reverse DNS, force the IP in xymonserver.cfg some tests like ssh are not working. My configuration of hosts.cfgwas clear and simple until today, i don't want to complexify it with @1.2.3.4 on all tests necessary. Is there another way to configure it ? At least is it possible to apply it for a complete line or a group ? Kind regards, Denis

xymongrep not checking local hosts.cfg

I am in the process of upgrading my hobbit servers to xymon. I started with a new (replacement) network test server, since I thought that'd be simplest to update invisibly to my users. I'm running Xymon 4.3.5 on NetBSD 5.1. # /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/xymongrep bgp 2011-10-20 10:40:41 Cannot load /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/server/etc/hosts.cfg, or file is empty And my DISPLAY server says (as I'm not allowing the new server to talk to it yet): Latest errormessages: Refused message from 129.186.6.39: config hosts.cfg Running ktrace on xymongrep, it isn't ever looking at the local file or even trying to, it's only ever trying to fetch it from the DISPLAY. # /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/xymongrep --hosts=/usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg bgp 2011-10-20 10:48:05 Cannot load /usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg, or file is empty I've set HOSTSCFG, I've made sure hosts.cfg is in /usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg and /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/server/etc/hosts.cfg is a link to that.
