xymon and monitoring hosts via port forwarding

I have a couple of smaller sites where our connectivity to them is only via port forwarding over a small business router. No VPN tunnel setup. Basically there are a couple of computers there that we'd like to monitor. Can xymon receive messages from a host via port forwarding? And what would the entry in the hosts file look like for such a setup? Can you give an IP address and port for it to communicate back the other way, i.e. pings, etc?

xympnproxy and xymonnet

I have a dual Xymon server setup. There is a main display server in a network context that allows connections to apache, etc, There is a network tester which is buried deep in the middle of the network which can do network tests to everything in the network. We also have a legacy private network which can't send client messages to the display server, but the network test server has an interface on that private network. The network tester is also running xymond because I didn't realize I could run the server without it. [The network test server is configured with $XYMSRV set to the IP of the display server. The docs are really not clear on how to set up a network test server.] In tasks,cfg I see # This is the main Xymon daemon. This must be running on at least # one server in your setup. If you are setting up a server to do # just network tests or run xymonproxy, it is OK to disable this (then # you also need to remove the "NEEDS xymond" lines for the tasks # you want to run). [xymond] which implies I don't need xymond on the network tester. But, of course it will need xymonnet. Can I safely turn off xymond there (removing the mentioned NEEDS) and turn on xymonproxy to try to get our private network hosts in the game? Will the network tester then continue to send data messages to the display server as it currently does or do I need to do something different to get it to use xymonproxy for that? I'm not really sure how it would know to send data to the display server without xymond running, but apparently it would (?). False positives for local connections when outside connections fail

Hi there, We are encountering a problem where, when Xymon fails to send statuses outside our isolated setup, we get false positives. Here's our current situation, happening right now: * we have HOBBITSERVERS set as "xymon.cb.internal, IP/32". * when there's a connectivity problem towards IP/32, we get false positives and we also get "Whoops ! bb failed to send message - timeout" for bbtest Checking the machine that does the reporting and the IPs inside the notifications, we could see that, basically, Xymon tries to match ports/procs to those defined for a different machine and thus fails. For example, it matches the reported data from prod-web-1 (listening on TCP:80, for example) with the actual checks defined for prod-admin-1 (listening on port TCP:53) and therefore, not finding a match, we get an alert. Has anyone seen such a thing before? Do you have a suggestion for us to solve this? We have had this happen to us with various installs, all based on Ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS, Hobbitd 4.2.3 running on top of AWS EC2. Thanks, -- Kii

adding a table to a custom test

I recently did pretty much exactly what you're wanting to do, but with xymon-4.3.7. I'm away from work this week so I can't check my script, but as far as I remember, I just sent the table tags with plain text in the boxes. I don't think I did anything special to make it work. As Jeremy says, the report text is displayed between <pre> tags, and at a previous $JOB I had scripts that sent in reports starting with the closing </pre> tag and ending with the opening <pre> tag. That might have been xymon-4.2.X, but it should still work with 4.3.10. rrd graphs in Xymon

Hi all, I've got an unusual issue at the moment with Graphs. I've written a script to collect Average Disk Queue Length from Windows servers and am looking to add a graph. I've configured the data as NCV in Xymonserver.cfg and I've created the graph definitions. Unfortunately because I have different number of disks on each server it's not working unless the server has exactly the number of disks that I have set up in the graph definition. At the moment the only 2 ways I can think of to get around this is to either have a different column name for each server (which would be very messy) or to change my script so that it will output lines for 10 disks even if it only has 1, so for example I would have this, Disk0 : 1 Disk1 : Disk2 : Disk3 : Disk4 : Disk5 : Disk6 : Disk7 : Disk8 : Disk9 : Not as messy as the different columns but still a bit untidy. Does anyone know a way to define a graph so that it will still work even if it doesn't find data in the rrd file for one or more of the DEF statements in the graph definition? xymon install issue

I recently installed xymon 4.3.8. Everything went smoothly, but when I pulled up the webpage I only see a directory listing. No index.html or xymon.html file being generated. I thought it was permissions or problems with apache config. But after looking at the xymongen.log file I see this: xymongen: error while loading shared libraries: libpcre.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory And I know libpcre was installed, and verified via find: find / -name libpcre.so.1 /usr/local/lib/libpcre.so.1 Does anyone have any ideas? I don't know where xymon is trying to look for this, or how it passed make and make install and now this is a problem. Thanks

Where is the version number stored in the system? I need to determine in scripts if I am running on 4.3.0-0.beta2 or 4.3.10 to access the correct file names. How does Xymon save state between server reboots?

Hi, All... Just curious: does anyone know how Xymon retains host / service state information between reboots of the Xymon server? I mean, if you have Host_A with services in various states, and then you bounce the Xymon server, does the server re-acquire all the services / states for Host_A from scratch, or does it retain any state information from somewhere on disk?
