Hi, I'm searching an easier way to configure my xymon 4.3.5 server other than specifying @IP at each test necessary in hosts.cfg. My configuration is with two IPs. I'm on Debian squeeze. One for the real physical IP and another with an alias (which i try to use with my xymon server). Even if i set a DNS name, a reverse DNS, force the IP in xymonserver.cfg some tests like ssh are not working. My configuration of hosts.cfgwas clear and simple until today, i don't want to complexify it with @1.2.3.4 on all tests necessary. Is there another way to configure it ? At least is it possible to apply it for a complete line or a group ? Kind regards, Denis

I am in the process of upgrading my hobbit servers to xymon. I started with a new (replacement) network test server, since I thought that'd be simplest to update invisibly to my users. I'm running Xymon 4.3.5 on NetBSD 5.1. # /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/xymongrep bgp 2011-10-20 10:40:41 Cannot load /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/server/etc/hosts.cfg, or file is empty And my DISPLAY server says (as I'm not allowing the new server to talk to it yet): Latest errormessages: Refused message from 129.186.6.39: config hosts.cfg Running ktrace on xymongrep, it isn't ever looking at the local file or even trying to, it's only ever trying to fetch it from the DISPLAY. # /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/xymongrep --hosts=/usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg bgp 2011-10-20 10:48:05 Cannot load /usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg, or file is empty I've set HOSTSCFG, I've made sure hosts.cfg is in /usr/pkg/etc/xymon/hosts.cfg and /usr/pkg/libexec/xymon/server/etc/hosts.cfg is a link to that. Ralph, When I removed the DS definition I did get the error message in the log so it looks like it's picking up the line. But it's not doing anything with it. I removed all the logfiles so it would be easy to find any error messages, but ten minutes later and nothing except a few peer not up messages from the restart. Unless Henrik has some suggestions to figure out why it doesn't work I'll probably be forced to make this an external test. Thanks for your help in troubleshooting though, it's much appreciated. You can see in the conn column where the probe temp rose too high. The probe data is graphed under the 1wire column, so it doesn't even matter if the rrd has a different name to the column. When I first added the extra bits, I stopped xymon, then started it. After subsequent changes I did a xymon.sh restart I don't think it's supposed to *need* the restart. You might also try removing the :ds0. That should cause a message like this in a log somewhere: Invalid DS definition at line %d (missing column, key and/or dataset) Don't know what else to suggest, except maybe insert a few more errprintf() lines in the code. It seems to be OK without or without the decimal, but with a space the number is read as 0.00. If I found the correct piece, the code is in xymon-4.3.3/xymond/client_config.c starting at line 1383 (line 1404 in xymon-4.3.5). The number is converted by atof() at line 1438 (line 1439 in 4.3.5), which is supposed to be able to deal with optional leading whitespace, but apparently that's not happening here. It takes a while for xymon to re-read the analysis.cfg file, so you might want to alter the TEXT string a bit each time you try something, so you know when the update takes effect. Hi Jeremy The reason I am using /opt/xymon is because I thought it would be a good idea to keep everything related to xymon inside /opt so that I will not have to look into different directories when I am looking for any xymon files. Xymonphiles: [Disclaimer: I don't think this is a Xymon problem but my boss thinks it might be and has directed me to ask the list for advice.] Running Xymon 4.2.3, display server is a Solaris box, monitoring a few hundred servers which are mostly RHEL 5, many of them are VMs hosted on ESX VMware. The test is an external script which basically does a 'sudo touch foo' on each file system and waits for it to either return with no problem, or return with an error indicating that the file system is read-only, or after 60 seconds declares that the file system is 'hung'. We had been having problems particularly with the read-only file system problem cropping up on the VMs, which is what prompted the implementation of this test. The problem with the test is that once or twice a day we get a flurry of alerts from a dozen or so servers, all at about the same time reporting that there is a hung file system. Other file systems on the same server are reporting that it takes longer to do the touch than we think it should (e.g. 12 to 25 or even 60 seconds). The alerts all go away the next test cycle. The file systems are on local fiber channel disks (i.e. not NFS mounted). The servers getting the alerts are not all VMs and it is not always the same set of servers that show up. Occasionally we catch a file system that is read-only and we are going to modify the test to not send a panic on the hung file system condition so we don't miss the read-only condition, but we really would like to figure out why we are getting these bursts of hung, or at least very slow writes on file systems and why they come in bursts. difference between apt-get install hobbit-client and xymon-client

I installed most of my servers with hobbit-client instead of xymon-client. What are the disadvantages of using hobbit-client ? I am running XYMON 4.3.5 . TIA!
