Hi. Did you configure the file /etc/default/hobbit-client to include the correct IP address on the linux machines? I think that the client doesn't listen if you've configured the client to send the data instead of cache'ing it. (unless you are using a server on each machine, in which case you have to proxy it forward to the main server). As for starting the client, I usually just run once '/etc/init.d/hobbit-client start' to get it running. The user "hobbit" should not have any extra special priv's unless you've configured your system to be anal in security. I use the hobbit-client package on my Linux clients and I don't have any hobbitd processes running, only hobbitlaunch. From that information I would gather that you have installed a server. Thus to get the information about your system out to the main hobbit, linux wise, you have to configure your hobbitlaunch.cfg file to act as a proxy and forward all the messages to the main hobbit monitor. I don't know if this answers any of your questions, but this is the answer to the question that I think you're asking. Hi. I don't have any guidelines, except of course to look in the configure files for each client. If you're going to configure a windows machine (BBWin) then I suggest changing the xml file located (most often anyways) in c:/program files/bbwin/etc/ and change the value from which the alert comes. I don't remember what the line says, but its under a subclass of <disk> or something like that. As for configuring Linux clients, change ~hobbit/client/etc/localclient.cfg file. In fact, any of my hobbitd is running on the clients. I started them with "client/runclient.sh start" but nothing listen in port 1984. /etc/services should be modified or something else ? The user "hobbit" should have special priviledges ? It happens to me on linux & with bbwin on Windows. CPU utilisation alerts

Hi all I'm baaaack :-) For those who might have missed me, I spent a few months contracting for a company that standardised on BMC Patrol. Wouldn't even look at Hobbit. BMC is a horrible package, expensive, not very extensible, with a huge client footprint and overhead, and is very prone to crashing. Sad product. But no matter, I am now trying to satisfy my new company that Hobbit is the one monitor to rule them all, and my new colleagues have identified a "deficiency". This has probably been asked and answered before, but here is what they want. I have been asked to generate a yellow/red status when absolute CPU utilisation reaches predetermined thresholds. Yes, I know, without looking at the run-queue this figure is not very meaningful, but this is what they want. The la1 graph in the trends column does an excellent job of graphing the CPU utilisation, but how do I configure an alert based on that figure? Idea about added RRD options

Hi Henrik (and anyone else who likes to code during their workhours ;-) I am trying to put up a custom graph based on an altered version of Dell System Check script (most changes I have made are to be found on the Shire). The graph is based on temperatures on 1-4 cpu's and 1-4 memory modules. The problem is that I can't know how many modules of cpu or ram I am going to put in a graph per server. The NCV module only generates one RRD file, so I can't use the @RRDIDX@ or @RRDPARAM@ variables for displaying everything correctly. I haven't tried to put every possible module in hobbitgraphs.cfg but I think that would not work or be very confusing when reading the graph solely. So my idea is to put a variable @RRDNAME@ variable that parses the names of the DS and thus displays only the DS's in the RRD file. Hello, I re-installed a couple of time and the only working configuration is the client with the configuration in the client side. There is no firewall between each hosts, it's a simple LAN 100Mb. Cool, it notifies me when it should with this configuration! Gonna check netapp and oracle monitoring! Questions about hobbitd_rrd

I'm just looking at the NCV_ stuff with the hobbit_rrd, and have some questions about it (for my first time setup) I was wondering how it would handle letters in the data stream, such as: Total: 3520W Reserved: 1223W Used: 1223W Remaining: 2297W And also, spaces in the data, such as: +5 Volts: +4.81 Volts With this look like NCV_bladecentervolts="+5 Volts:GAUGE" ? devmon question

I've just setup devmon, and would like some advice from other folks who are using it. I poked around the devmon "forums" and needless to say they weren't very helpful. I am currently awaiting moderator approval to post to the devmon support email list, so thought I would also post it here just in case a fellow Hobbit user that is familiar with devmon could help. Among the devices I am monitoring is a Cisco 3750 user stack switch. By default, devmon trips a red alarm if a port is in the "down" state. I want this behavior on some of the 3750's I am monitoring, but this particular one I do not, because it would trigger everytime someone powers their workstation off. So, I am trying to override the threshold via options in bb-hosts. Here is what I am currently using, which is NOT working: 10.10.10.10 user_stack # testip DEVMON:thresh(if_stat;ifOperStatTxt;g:down) According to my understanding of the docs, this should override the alert color such that it is green when the port is in "down" state. Can any other devmon users see what I am doing wrong there? I think I also need to know how to override a single specific port :( -Charles
