Where did hobbitdboard go?

One year late or so, I finally upgraded the old hobbit server or ours from Debian Etch with self-build hobbit 4.2 to Debian Lenny with hobbit package from Debian, version 4.2.0 (4.2.0.dfsg-14lenny3) - and from what I can see it works quite like normal. However, I have some scripts myself that use hobbitdboard - this command is not to be found in the hobbit package - is this a packing bug, or is it replaced with something else? I dont see any hobbitdlog or hobbitdxboard either. -- Kolbjørn Barmen UNINETT Driftsenter

bbproxy crashes when one of our hobbitds goes down

Hi all! We're experiencing some problems with bbproxy that crashes when one of the hobbitds it's sending data to goes down. I've been working to reproduce this problem in a testing environment and it's very easily reproduced. My test environment contains of two hobbitds, a bbproxy and one client, the client is reporting to the hobbitds through the bbproxy. When I stop one of the hobbitds it take about 10-30 seconds before bbproxy crashes. When this one client sends data every 1 minute the bbproxy will survive one of the hobbitds going down and start sending data to it when it comes up again. However, in our production environment we push one message per second through our bbproxy and when I push one message per second through bbproxy in my testing enviroment I experience the same problem as in my production environment, bbproxy crashes. To recover from this I need to start up the hobbitd again and all of our bbproxys. Trying to set up split client load over mutiple servers.

Sorry if this post gets a bit long, I've read thru the man pages and the archives and have failed to reach understanding and need some help. I have over 4300 Hobbit 4.2.0+all-patches clients currently reporting to one server running Xymon 4.3.0-0.beta2. This server is also used for other workloads, which normally do not produce much of a load but can at times. We are adding more clients to this configuration at rate of about 400/week for a final total of about 7200 clients. As of this week it seems that my Xymon server is unable to keep up with the load and I suspect this is due to several reasons: the large number of clients, file system type (ext3) used for the data/.. directories (, the problem is. I am trying to determine my best course to be able to handle the 7200+ clients ... Some options I've considered: A) simply split the clients over 2 or more independent Xymon servers a. easiest to configure b. lose 'single web page' overview c. lose combined statistics/reporting B) Split clients over multiple servers for data gathering/storage and (how?) use one server to display a bb2.html page which combines all non green from all 'data-gathering' servers a. Is this even possible? C) Some other method/configuration? Anyone on the list running this many clients? a. How did you set up your environment? b. What size/performance/type of system are you using for your Xymon server? Some of my current symptoms: The 'top' command on the server is indicating high I/O load (at times %iowait > 60%). The 'procs' column warns/alerts about missing processes; closer examination shows that the client data received has been truncated, usually somewhere in the 'ps' outout section. The bb2.html page sometimes shows many 'purple' clients; the clients in purple change (eg, a client goes purple for a while 5-30+ minutes, then we get another message processed and the client goes green again. Strane one.

Hi Xymonsters I got a interesting one. At a site we have a DC/Exchange machine that has gone purple on the ports, procs and svcs tests. I had a look at the hobbit column and found the following message. Oversize data/client msg from 172.27.15.7 truncated (n=6562423, limit 524288). It turns out to be the dc/exchange server with the purple columns. I had a look at the NT event log we are pulling is huge due to a security issue. Any ideas on how to resolve this? The network guys at this site is well let's just say Mine Sweeper Consultants Solitaire Experts(aka MCSE no offence to the decent ones out there) that cannot resolve the security issue. Can one set this size in hobbit? Regards Neil

Send mail problem.

Hi All. Just finished setting up a new xymon box on CentOS. Thanks Buchan Milne for the packages. Everything was so smooth it was scary. Anyway one last hurdle for me. I setup the alerts and they are coming through very nicely on email. I am using send mail as a server. However I am getting links like the following in the mail See http://localhost/xymon-cgi/bb-hostsvc.sh?HOST=Supremacy&SERVICE=conn . For some unknown reason it is seeing the server as localhost and thus the link does not work. Can anyone give me some pointers on where to look? Is this a send mail issue or is it a setting somewhere in xymon? Regards Neil

FW: Graph on status page but not on trends

Hi all, I am battling with trying to get a graph to appear on the trends column. What I have is a custom test appearing in it's own status column - specifically "databases". The data as well as the graph is correct in it's own status column, but don't seem to appear on the trends column with the other graphs. There is probably something obvious that I am missing, but can't get this working correctly. The only way I can get the graph to appear in the trends column is to change the bb-hosts to something like the following : x.x.x.x mf # TRENDS:*,cics:cics|databases The databases graph then appears on the trends column, but this is not quite what I want to do. However, doing it this way then provides a different restriction. If the cics graph only has 4 cics sessions that it is reporting on, and the databases graph has 7 databases that it is reporting on, when the graphs are displayed on the trends column, the cics graph is correct but the databases graph only displays the first 4 databases (below) instead of all 7 databases (above).
