I've searched many times on this list 'How to set up monitoring disk drives in Windows'. However, I've never found a real solution. So, we have done some scripting ourselved querying WMI and want to trend this output. If I use the Totals (for all the disks) it is pretty straight forward. This works as expected. However, if I would like to trend to a specific disk, it becomes more complex. My test for disk C produces the following: _DskQL:0 _DskRdQL:0 _DskWrQL:0 _DskBtsPerRd:17423 _DskBtsPerTr:11933 _DskBtsPerWr:11246 Now, what I would like to have is a rrd.file for each drive letter, in this case drive_c.rrd, (just like the disk-test, all the disks are shown in one graph but each disk has an rrd-file) but I do not know how to continue. Drives under Windows can have any letter (C, D, ...Z) and I do not want to fill in the entire alphabet in my hobbitserver.cfg, but perhaps this is the only way to go without real programming. But perhaps data trending, instead of status, would be a better approach. But how should I do this? Any help much appreciated. If this works, I will post the result on Xymonton. Regards, Peter

Most stable version?

Hi all, My current hobbit 4.2.0 server, running on HPUX 11v1 has served us well over the past almost three years, but the old rp5400 with 2x540 Mhz PARISC chips, monitoring 435 hosts across 3 continents is starting to run out of steam and its time it be replaced. I just got two new HP DL380 G5 servers which we purchased to build out as new Xymon servers (one for prod and one for DR). I am wondering what is currently the most stable release of Xymon? I see 4.3.0-beta2 is the most recent. Would that be the best to use for new production monitors? I am building them with RedHat AS 5 update 2. Anybody know of any Gotha's I should be aware of? Finally, I have seen comments about people who have written scripts to transfer the data out of RRD files an old server to their new server. Since I am migrating from HPUX to RedHat, I gather that is my only option to migrate the RRD data. Anyone out there willing to share their scripts which do this migration? That would sure save me a lot of coding and testing time. Xymon thresholds using a date

Here is my issue. From Nov 1 - Dec 30 my systems CPU, Memory and usage in general is increased 2 to 3 time over the rest of the year. I would like to have 2 sets of thresholds one for Jan - Oct and another for Nov - Dec. Any way to have 2 thresholds set per system monitored? The only thing I can think of would be to maintain 2 hobbit-clients.cfg and copy them back and forth as needed. This may be my answer :) Looking in the hobbit-clients.cfg MAN pages I see: TIME=timespecification Rule matching by the time-of-day. This is speci- fied as the DOWNTIME time specification in the bb-hosts file. E.g. "TIME=W:0800:2200" applied to a rule will make this rule active only on week-days between 8AM and 10PM. So the "TIME" is available but no "Date" and you can only have one entry. So in the example above the "TIME" rule would only be active Monday - Friday from 08:00 - 22:00 and all other time the default would apply. Anyone have this issue? Any thoughts on a better way? Conn time discrepancy

I've searched the archives and didn't find anything, I'm hoping someone here has some insight. Occasionally we'll notice some drastic change in the graphing on Xymon for the conn times, and when I bring these up with the networking folks they basically dismiss it because the labels on the side of the scale are "wrong". What I'm seeing is that the Y axis is being labeled as "Seconds" with the "m" after the scale, and it reports around 40-80mS for ping times. This isn't what we're seeing from the box itself though when we execute the same hobbitping :

Alert if a list of devices that are not related are all down?

I would like to have XYMON: E.G. All printers are down at the same time - ALERT All printers just came back up at the same time - NOTIFY/ALERT I need to watch multiple printers in a building to see if they are ALL down (or come up) at the same time. This is the makings of a POWER OUTAGE EVENT for that building since the printers are not attached to a UPS. If all down, Possible Power Outage I know that the 'route:' can watch a path to a device and make the devices behind the down devices go YELLOW and the first device in the path go RED. I don't think that this would work for this type of alerting. I think this will require some sort of SCRIPT in the hobbit-alerts.cfg that is executed if any of the printers do not answer a ping. I have never written a SCRIPT for XYMON but am eager to learn. In this case the first printer that goes down, calls the script and the script would have to check if all the other printers are down. If I have a printer go down and it calls a bash shell script, is there a way to see if all the rest of the printers are down. If not, do not alert If all down, alert I would also need to go the other way: if a printer comes up (RECOVERED) are all the other printers up? This one is more tricky as you have to see when all the other printers came up. It would be a false alarm if a single printer went down and then came back up because you cannot just check to see if all the other printers are up. EXAMPLE: The rest of the printers may have been up and that would not be a POSSIBLE POWER EVENT. You must be able to see when the other printers came up last. The other alternative would be to use my scripts (running on the XYMON server) to watch the printers and then allow the scripts to trigger a RED/GREEN event. I have read where this can be done, but I have not found a good clear example of creating diamonds and icons for special purposes. This RED/GREEN event would then trigger the alerting from XYMON. Looks good. Do you have plans to introduce the "template" and/or "group" concept? e.g. I have a template called "Windows" Apply it to my windows servers, they get defaults applied for thresholds. Eg. Cpu is set to 80% warning, disk is set to 75% full, certain services are checked, etc. Another template called "Apache" It gets process checks for http added to the host... My host called win-apache.example.com gets 2 templates applied to it. You can also override default settings for each host. Concepts from bbconfigure on deadcat ;) Makes large scale management much easier. Craig

Hobbit alert colors

Hi Everyone, Is there any others colors besides green, red, yellow and blue that can be used. Can we add our own colors and pictures for those. Writting my own little VCS check script and would like perhaps something like and even a little picture of a tiny snow flake to represent the cluster being in a frozen state? I have everything working just the FROZEN state color not implemented yet? Regards Shaun.

Windows Server 2008 - ifstat RRD files

I have BBWin 0.12 installed on a good number of windows machines, mostly server 2003 but 5 or 6 run server 2008. All the 03 machines report network traffic fine. All of the 08 machines are seeing 'random' network adapter addresses and bogus traffic info. The following is an example of what's being reported under [ifstat]: 0.96.0.0 0 0 99.0.0.0 1598858570 2041621859 7.0.0.0 0 0 69.2.0.0 0 0 4.0.0.0 0 0 28.0.0.0 0 0 Those addresses change each time the client sends data. Anyone have a fix? Or at the very least turn off the creation of rrd files for these specific hosts. At the moment I have a few hosts with about 10,000 'network adapters' that all try to graph on the trends page. (Originally posted to the BBWin list last week but no replies yet. There's more eyes here anyway.) Thanks

I think I have posted this quite a while ago but it is still on my mind. We currently configure the hosts, pages etc using a windows database and windows front end that I wrote quite some time ago. I keep getting the urge to convert it to a linux database and a web frontend. However I would not do this if there is no interest in using it. The point is that you never touch the bb-hosts file and all configuration of hosts and layouts is done via a user interface. Is there any interest in this? Is there anyone willing to help? If so I was going to convert to mysql and either php or perl cgi. Any comments on this? We have 400 odd hosts here and have pages split by priority, service, location, and support group all on the front page but all configured via the database.
