It's possible that you don't have enough shared memory, you can try to change the 4096 to something less like 1024 or 2048. it depends from the size of your cfg2html generated file. Installing hobbit help

I am trying to install hobbit in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 server. I talked earlier with Red Hat and they say that they don't support rpm which are not downloaded from the Red Hat network. Well, no problem, I prefer not to call them about it that not to run hobbit since it is extremely useful for me. Anyhow, I had installed it in a virtual machine running fc5 and it was quite easy to install. I am just starting as a Linux administrator, and even I had administered Windows servers for years, the switch is not so easy. I like Linux and I am quite excited to get the most of it, but sometimes I stumble around, just like at this moment, so here go a couple of my silly questions: For security reasons I should not run hobbit as root. I understand that, but should I run the installation as root, or as hobbit? Which would be the best folder for installation? I know this is a bit more open, but I would like the server to be kept clean, so I don't want to spread the installation everywhere I want it to make sense. I think with just a little bit more of info I would be able to get a good installation going. Question about this List

Guys not about hobbit per say but more about the list Today I have been getting duplicate emails from the mailing list ?I checked my sendmail logs and I'm recieving 2 different messages with different ID's so its not my mail client. Also messages from other sources are only coming in once also Is anyone else having this issue or got any suggestions ? Cheers Allan

Hobbit-perl-notes

Hi all, I've just uploaded on sourceforge the first version of my notes editing system. I'm finish to test it so consider it a beta :D (probably full of bug :D ) You can find it on the sourceforge page http://sourceforge.net/projects/hobbit-perl-cl/ with also all the other software I did (hobbit-perl-client, hobbit-perl-graph and bb-cfg2html). I hope that the Install instruction are complete but it's possible that I've forgot something (probably some chmod/chown to be done). If you have any problem let me know so I can correct the bugs that will came out. Francesco This is the description of what you'll find in it: hobbitperl-notes is a complete notes editing and reporting system for hobbit server. It's fully customizable via web and you can create new fields and change data via a simple web interface. You can put links, email address and even phone number (if you have a voip software that will do the call via a web interface). Data can be assigned to 4 categories (Hardware/Software/Procedure/General) and you'll also have a link to the old documntation file if they're present in the notes directory (hostname.html and hostname file are recognized). Link can point to web pages (you can also put $HOSTNAME on a link to be substituted with the hostname you're currently viewing) or to unc windows path (put a \\servername\pathto\file.doc to open a word file located in the share \\servername\pathto). On the notes pages there will also be a clickable list of all services monitored for that host with the last time of state change. You can create groups to assign them to more then one host without the need of rewrite basic information like software vendor and support link/email. You can also link server with other server so you can move between database server/application server/web server of a single application without the need to return to the hobbit pages. Last but not least you can also create csv report of a selected part (host and field you want to report) of the data collected to be elaborated by a spreadsheet to have a documentation of all your systems. Editing notes will create file named hostname.cfg in the notes directory of your hobbit server. After you've followed the installation instruction you've just to click on a hostname on the hobbit web pages to go to the notes interface and from there you can edit that host data or the default parameters (here you can add groups, fields and change the order of displayed data).

[hobbit] Ignoring linux cached data in memory

Is there any way in Hobbit to have the memory graphs *not* include the memory that Linux is using for cached data? We have a few machines that tend to have large portions of their memory being used for the system cache, and as such, often show 100% swap and physical memory being used, when in fact there is still free memory. I would imagine other people have run across this, and I'm curious what has been done to remedy this.

interpretation of status/colour for combo test

I have been asked to provide an availability number for a number of services monitored as separate hosts with Hobbit. Eg, two different IP addresses running a few different services, and we need to provide an availability number for the combination (eg, when was everything working correctly). I have set up a rule in bbcombotest.cfg, but according to the man page, green, yellow or clear result in 1 ("true"), and red, purple or blue result in 0 ("false"). However, I would like the combined service to appear "down" when one of the monitored services is yellow (eg smtp being yellow indicates a failure). It would be nice if some of this were configurable, or if each state had a distinct value.
