I'm trying to setup mpstat to monitor systems with multiple cpu's, but the graphs are not created. Can someone help me with this ? The information is send from the client to the server and in the rrd data directory I have a file called mpstat.CPU2.rrd but there are no values in the last ds (see example) <ds> <name> CPU </name> <type> GAUGE </type> <minimal_heartbeat> 600 </minimal_heartbeat> <min> 0.0000000000e+00 </min> <max> 3.2000000000e+01 </max>  <last_ds> </last_ds> <value> NaN </value> <unknown_sec> 241 </unknown_sec> </ds> the contents of the hobbit_mpstat.hostname.send file is CPUs: 2 CPU0usr: 17.18 CPU0sys: 1.34 CPU0wt: 0.06 CPU0idl: 81.31 CPU1usr: 26.16 CPU1sys: 1.40 CPU1wt: 0.06 CPU1idl: 72.29 And I have copied the rrd_data.pl from the shire and can't find a typo in it. cont check regex problems

I'm not clear what I'm doing wrong in my cont check in bb-hosts, and I was hoping someone could help me out. My regular expression works fine in perl: perl -e '$text = join "", <>; if ($text =~ /assetID="[0-9A-Fa-f]{8}"/) { print "OK\n"; } else { print "NotOK\n"; }' < /tmp/vodbrowser.php However, bb-hosts line fails on the regex check: 10.100.104.53 seachange-vod # testip cont=vod;http://mrteeny/vod/vodbrowser.php;assetID="[0-9A-Fa-f]{8}" It *is* a webpage I'm trying to match... so the page starts with: <html> <head> <title>VOD Interface</title> </head> <body bgcolor=white> <h3 align=center>Vod Interface</h3> <pre> ----------------------------------- assetID="00080002" However, I really only care if the assetID is being displayed. Any suggestions?

History File Management

I recently installed hobbit to monitor nodes in a cluster. It's a very good product - thanks to all who have worked on it! I noticed after a while, that the hobbit home directory was growing in an apparently boundless fashion. On further investigation, I discovered that on one server, my history files had grown to several gigabytes. After a while, this growth becomes unsustainable. Am I doing something wrong? How do others manage the growth of hobbit history and log files? I'm not referring to those in /var/log/hobbit - that's easy to handle with logrotate. I'm concerned about the directories associated with each client under the server data directory. Thanks! David

Secondary ping?

Heres the problem my hobbit server can ping HostA and HostB but SOMETIMES HostA and HostB cannot ping each other . Besides a client side script, anyone think of a way to do this and take advantage of hobbit functionality. BBNET? route ? something else?

Latest stable snapshot?

Hi all, We manage several systems and use hobbit for monitoring all of them. I was hoping someone might be able to tell me what is the current recommended version to be running? 4.2.0 is getting very old and does not include a large number of features we like. One of our systems was updated to a snapshot at some point, which is generally working okay but still has some problems (history viewer crashes occasionally, but can always be resolved by simply refreshing the page). I'd now like to find a stable 4.3 release that we can deploy instead of that. From what I've gathered the snapshots are not generated anymore. The SVN seems to be generally very unstable from what I've seen (I've tested two checkouts in the last few days and both have kind-of worked but had more severe crashing issues with the viewers than the current snapshot). I'm also a bit confused by the fact that the SVN does not seem to match the snapshots. One of our systems (which is working very well) has a snapshot which identifies itself as 4.3.0-0.20080327. The source for that snapshot is lost at our end. Looking through the SVN the versions which have that string in include/version.h are versions 5614 through 5626. None of these revisions compile as the file hobbitd/client/hmdc.c does not exist but is referenced in the build! Was there an out-of-tree patch made for the snapshot release? Anyway, any pointers or advice from others running 4.3 snapshots would be greatly appreciated. :) Kind regards, Davíð Steinn Geirsson Basis ehf.

Status re. renaming and my health-issue

To start with the eye-problems I've had, I am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday (Aug. 27). It's a relatively simple operation - I'll be out of the hospital the same day - but I cannot use my eyes normally for a few weeks after the operation. Meaning that I am not allowed to read, work with a computer, or drive a car for 2-4 weeks. So I'll be completely off-line during that period. Sorry, but that's the way it is. Now to the grand renaming debate. The last time I mentioned that I had another candidate, but I was waiting to see if the domain names were going to expire. Alas, they did not. The name I had in mind was "Sysdar", being short for "Systems Radar" - but phonetically also rather neat, since it brings in memories of "Big Sister" and hence "Big Brother". It didn't quite work out. That doesn't mean I'll scratch that idea completely - it's still a good name, and there are no trademark registrations or anything else indicating that the name is used at all, so we could just work it out with a different domain name (e.g. sysdar.eu or sysdar.dk). My favourite right now is G-lance. I've noted that HP has the "GlancePlus" software, but I hope that won't be a problem due to the explicit dash and therefore the very different pronounciation. "hobbitmon" and "hobbeat" are outsiders. I'd have to get an OK for those from the Tolkien lawyers, and I am a bit sceptical about them accepting either. Also, I think they are OK names for people who know what Hobbit is about - but they have no meaning what so ever to new users (or PHB's). Nothing's going to change (obviously) for the next few weeks, so feel free to voice opinions and/or come up with good ideas until then. Regards, Henrik

Qustion regarding movement of history information.

To hobbit mail list, I have made a configuration alteration in my hobbit setup. Previously I had a screen layout like : SERVERS t1 t2 t3 t4 t5 SERV1 x x x x x SERV2 x x x x x Where t4 and t5 where some test done on Oracle Now we would like to have a layout as: SERVERS t1 t2 t3 SERV1 x x x SERV2 x x x ORACLE_SERVERS t4 t5 SERV1_ORA1 x x SERV2_ORA1 x x where the new server name is a combination of the server name and the ORACLE_SID. I have no problems doing this by just adding a new server-group in bb-hosts and then let the tests t4 and t5 send to the new defined hosts. My question now is, if there is a way to get the history information from server SERV1 t4 to move to the history of SERV_ORA1 t4 so we still have the old history information. We have not deleted the SERV1 t4 t5 and SERV2 t4 t5 so the history can still be seen by clicking the x-button, but as there is no more info sent to these servers/tests I would like them not to be displayed from the SERV1 and SERV2 line. If there was a way to merge, this info I would like to know. I want to monitor the size of the logfiles on windows servers. NCV graph problem

Hi, I have a problem making NCV graph. I have a test which send something like "Total: x" (where x is an integer). The test returns these values : 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 0. On the graph I have 0, 0, 0.163, 1, 1, 1, 0.837 and I don't understanf why.. I'm quite new to hobbit's graph, is that an avegare value or something ? If so, is there a way to graph only what the script returns ? Thanks in advance.

moving historical data from Big Brother to Hobbit

When I copy over the historical data from Big Brother to Hobbit, I get clears for all the conn tests. Can I just rename the HOST.fping files to HOST.conn?
